'Come and Take it': A turf war between two bock beer giants has begun in Shiner, Texas

There's a "new Bock" in town.

Or so read a sign inside a beer tent at a music festival in Shiner, Texas advertising Houston-based Karbach Brewing Company's Crawford Bock, a collaborative effort between the Houston Astros and the once-independent brewer now owned by Anheuser-Busch.

But it's not the beer that stopped many folks in their tracks when they saw it.  To the makers of the beloved Texas beer Shiner Bock, shots had been fired and boundaries had been crossed.

"We've heard some chatter about uncommon sights around town last month -- three billboards and a concert sponsorship touting, 'There's a new Bock in Shiner,'' begins an open letter published in the Shiner Gazette from Spoetzl Brewery.

"It is not the Shiner Bock that's brewed here in Shiner at the K. Spoetzl Brewery," the letter continues. "It is not the 110 percent independent and family-owned Shiner Bock."
