TEA to host community meetings on Houston ISD board takeover
« on: November 08, 2019, 11:57:28 pm »
Houston Chronicle 11/8/2019

The Texas Education Agency has scheduled four public meetings in November to discuss the process for replacing Houston ISD’s elected school board with a state-appointed governance team.

The 90-minute meetings will be held:

Nov. 13, 6 p.m., Pershing Middle School

Nov. 14, 6 p.m., Wheatley High School

Nov. 21, noon, Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center

Nov. 21, 6 p.m., Chavez High School

The meetings follow the agency’s decision this week to oust the district’s school board because of chronically low performance at Wheatley and substantiated findings of misconduct by multiple HISD trustees.

State law mandates that Texas Education Commissioner close Wheatley or replace HISD’s school board after the Fifth Ward campus received its seventh consecutive failing grade in August. Morath also determined the board should be replaced following a state inquiry that found some trustees violated the Texas Open Meetings Act, made false statements to investigators and improperly interfered with district contracts. HISD trustees are suing to stop the intervention, with a preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for Dec. 5.
