Virginia Election Results Cast Ominous Cloud over State’s Second Amendment Freedoms

Republicans lost both the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate Tuesday, having previously controlled both chambers. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) failed earlier this year to restrict gun-owners’ Second Amendment rights, but the legislature is now set for an aggressive push to deliver different results. This marks the first time since 1994 that Democrats have held unilateral control of the state government.

Northam convened a special session July 9 to push gun-control measures in the wake of the Virginia Beach tragedy that left over a dozen people dead; including at least one, Kate Nixon, who wanted to bring her self-defense gun to the office where she was killed, but didn’t because it was a so-called “gun-free zone.”

Northam’s proposals included “universal” background checks on firearm sales and transactions, bans on so-called “assault weapons,” a limit of one handgun purchase per month (this would have reinstated a Virginia law that had been repealed in 2012 after being shown to be ineffective in reducing violent crime), the passage of some version of “red-flag laws,” and other unconstitutional measures.

Mike Bloomberg’s gun-control group just vastly outspent the NRA to help Democrats win in Virginia

Key Points

•   Gun-control was a massive issue in the race for Virginia’s statehouse.

•   Democrats will now control the legislature for the first time since 1994, as Mike Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety overwhelmed the NRA in spending during the election campaign.

•   Everytown spent $2.5 million to support the Virginia elections, easily outpacing the approximately $300,000 spent by the NRA, which has its headquarters in the state.

A gun-control lobbying group funded largely by billionaire Michael Bloomberg just helped Democrats take over the state government in Virginia – right in the National Rifle Association’s backyard.

In Tuesday’s elections, the Democrats tipped the Virginia House and Senate in their favor, giving them full control of the state government for the first time since 1994. The election had stronger-than-usual turnout in the suburbs, according to media reports.

While the results could be a good omen for Democrats’ chances in 2020, it may also be a tipping point in the money battle over gun rights. Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun-control advocacy group that the former New York mayor helps fund, spent $2.5 million this year to influence voters in Virginia versus approximately $300,000 by the NRA, which has its headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.

Virginia election results pave the way for Ralph Northam’s anti-Second Amendment agenda

Remember Ralph Northam? He's the governor of Virginia who got away with wearing blackface and/or a KKK costume in his 20s — during the 1980s — and who expressed support for infanticide. He remained in office, of course, because he’s a Democrat. And thanks to the results of the Nov. 5 Virginia election, Northam has a Democratic majority in both houses of the state legislature and an opportunity to implement his radical, anti-Second Amendment agenda.

Northam tried to distract from his racism scandal by calling for a special legislative session in July and announcing a sweeping gun-control platform. Now, his proposals might become law.

“Virginia voters on Tuesday handed control of the state’s General Assembly to Democrats, setting up the most progressive legislature in modern times,” the Richmond Times Dispatch reported. “Tuesday’s results give them power to pass an agenda and allow Gov. Ralph Northam to sign his party’s bills into law.”

Yikes.

Spent a little time in Fairfax and Alexandria counties - not alot of difference between them and the SF Bay Area, aside from being considerably more white.

@Elderberry

LOTS of easy babes away from home the first time, but other than that I can't think of one single reason to go there other than the occasional trip to Arlington to attend a burial. In fact, that is the only reason I have gone there since the 70's.
