Urban Planners Herald End of Cars in Cities

The road to the future of mobility can be bumpy. It can also lead in the wrong direction from time to time.

During a recent test drive, the freshly downloaded app from Tier, an e-scooter rental company, promises that the next electric scooter is 393 meters (1,289 feet) away, parked near Frankfurt's Alte Oper concert house. The only problem is that's north, whereas the destination of the journey, the city's central train station, is to the south.

It takes a minute to locate the scooter, which is somewhat hidden in the entryway of a courtyard, and electronically unlock it. Now comes the bumpy part. This is in part due to the scooter's rigid construction and its small, hard wheels, but it's also because of the lousy quality of the bike path along Frankfurt's Reuterweg street. It's a narrow and rough stretch of concrete pavers that can only be distinguished from the adjacent, pedestrian-only path by their color. Going any faster than the 20 kilometers per hour (12 miles per hour) permitted by German law would be hazardous to everyone's health.

I was just talking about these scooters with a co-worker yesterday. He said that last time he went to a game it was great.

Parked relatively far away where it's much cheaper, hopped on one of these scooters and was at the arena in a couple minutes for like $1.

I like this revolution in big cities.
If a well-regulated militia be the most natural defense of a free country, it ought certainly to be under the regulation and at the disposal of that body which is constituted the guardian of the national security.

Stalin was a big fan of centralized planning that eliminated private ownership of cars, and even made getting to work convenient by creating multi-story concrete apartment buildings near the Soviet factories that were for the exclusive use of the workers.

Wadda guy! He would have no trouble at all getting elected to lead the Left Coast if he were still alive today.

If you wanted a car and were not a party official, you had to get permission and approval from your factory boss to buy one, then pay for it in advance and wait for it to be built.

None of this applied if you were a political boss, though. They even had center lanes in every road in Moscow reserved exclusively for THEIR use only, and had policemen at every intersection to take over control of the red lights to make sure all traffic stopped so THEY wouldn't have to wait for a light change while on their way to their private mansions located outside of Moscow.

It's only a matter of time before people like Steve Jobs enjoy such privileges in a world where people like Leonardo DiCaprio, who is a well-known environmentalist who thinks we should all carpool, ride buses,or walk to work, and who is a HUGE fan of the little teenage Swedish Nazi on tour now, rents a 478 MILLION dollar yacht to cruise down south with his friends to enjoy the World Cup Games. I am ALMOST certain it gets at least 50 sea miles per gallon,or he wouldn't have rented it,right?

Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

  • That is the problem with everything. They try and make it better without realizing the old is fine.
