A fifth victim has succumbed to her injuries Friday after a Halloween party shooting at an Airbnb in Orinda. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Oshiana Tompkins of Vallejo.

Now, a total of five people have been killed and at least three injured in the shooting at the Orinda home. The home was rented by a woman who falsely claimed she wanted the Airbnb so her asthmatic family members could escape wildfire smoke, police and a person with knowledge of the transaction said Friday.

Gunshots were reported at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday at the large home in the wealthy San Francisco suburb of Orinda where more than 100 people had gathered, police said. The home, surrounded by trees and up a steep driveway, had been rented on Airbnb by a woman who told the owner her dozen family members needed a location with fresh air, the person with knowledge of the transaction told The Associated Press.

A one-night rental on Halloween was suspicious enough that before agreeing to rent the home the owner reminded the renter that no parties were allowed, said the person, who was not authorized to publicly disclose the information and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

  Do article authors Stefanie Dazio and Daisy Nguyen live anywhere near the SF Bay Area? Orinda is tony, but between Orinda and SF are the rather large city of Oakland and San Francisco Bay! Orinda is about 15 miles ENE, straight line, from SF and a similar distance south of Vallejo. I could understand some NY reporter not thinking to look at a map and making this mistake, but a supposed Bay Area reporter?

Orinda is in the hills between Oakland and Walnut Creek, with three reservoirs near the town (lots of recreation opportunities). "Wealthy" might be a bit of an over-statement.

Vallejo being as far from Orinda as it is, and even farther by car, I'm going to speculate that the killer was either part of the party or had followed the partiers to Orinda. Vallejo has become a bit of a rough city since the closing of Mare Island. There have also been a number of shootings on I-80 between Vallejo and Berserkeley.

Orinda shooting: Fifth victim, a teen, dies from her injuries at Halloween party in rented mansion

ORINDA — A mansion rented through Airbnb for a Halloween party turned into a chaotic scene Thursday evening, when gunfire broke out, killing five people, injuring several others and sending more than 100 frightened partygoers fleeing from the posh neighborhood of this affluent city where violent crime is rare.

After confirming the deaths of four men in their 20s earlier in the day, police announced late Friday night that a fifth shooting victim, a 19-year-old woman, died at a local hospital.

Police still don’t know whether more than one shooter was involved or have any motives.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and Orinda Police Department released the names of the dead victims — Tiyon Farley, 22, of Antioch; Omar Taylor, 24, of Pittsburg; Ramon Hill Jr., 23, of San Francisco/Oakland; and Javin County, 29, of Sausalito/Richmond. Hours later, the sheriff’s office said a fifth victim had been pronounced dead at a hospital and identified her as Oshiana Tompkins, 19, of Vallejo/Hercules.

They said several injured victims were transported by ambulance, and others took themselves, to hospitals. They either suffered from gunshot wounds or were injured while fleeing the scene. No other information was immediately available.

There's a fair amount of info in this article about the party, but I didn't find any articles about progress in finding out who did the shooting and why. It sounds like this house had become known as a place for large parties, though the owner says that on this occasion it had been rented to someone who lied about what they were planning. The party itself sounds like it was widely advertised in terms that might draw unpleasant people - "BYOB" and "BYOW". Going by the residences listed for the people killed it seems to have drawn from the NE Bay Area, from both sides of the Carquinez Strait Bridge (I-80).

An update:

ATF arrests 2 people in connection with Orinda Halloween shooting

ORINDA — Two more people have been arrested by federal agents in connection with the investigation into a shooting at a Halloween party in Orinda that killed five people and wounded nine more.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives arrested two people Thursday on warrants obtained by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, ATF spokesperson Alexandria Corneiro said.

While executing the warrants, ATF agents seized a gun that was linked through ballistics testing to multiple other shootings in the Bay Area, Corneiro said.

The arrests follow previous arrests of five suspects who were released after the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office declined to charge them with crimes.

According to the sheriff's office, prosecutors wanted more investigation before bringing criminal charges.
