Victory at the Battle of Beersheba enabled the Allied forces to move forward and capture Jerusalem from the Ottomans just six weeks later.

 Declaring that the Battle of Beersheba, which had been decisively won 102 years ago by Australian and New Zealand [ANZAC] forces, had changed the course of history in the region and the world, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard honored the memories of all brave soldiers - friend and foe - who fell in the battle in 1917.

"We are here not in triumph but in tribute," he said, in the course of an address at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Beersheba.
"1917 was a miserable and traumatic year for Australia with so much slaughter on the battlefields," the former prime minister continued. "In October 1917 more Australians died on the battlefield than in any other war before or since."

At Gallipoli in 1915, the ANZAC Forces sustained casualties in excess of 40,000
while at Beersheba in 1917, their casualties were less than 200.

Where did former PM Howard denigrate or minimize 1915 losses? I did not see that in the article. OTOH, the Battle of Beersheba was a key victory in wrenching most of the ME from the Ottoman Empire. Why minimize its significance?

Howard's quoted words were:
"In October 1917, more Australians died on the battlefield than in any other war, before or since."
Respectfully, Beersheba was a triviality, dwarfed by the titanic struggles on the Somme, Tannenberg
and Verdun, among several.

Howard's words speak for themselves as 1917 was not the same year as 1915!!!
Austria, Britain, France, Germany and Russia were the movers/shakers of the
Great War, while the Ottoman Empire was as consequential as Rhodesia & Uganda.
