MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s armed forces were deployed to the city of Culiacán on Thursday night, as shootouts and street battles erupted in the streets, according to local news reports.

On Thursday evening, the government of Sinaloa state issued a warning on Twitter, urging residents to stay calm but “not to go out in the streets and to stay on high alert for official notices.”

It said that the armed forces were in the city “for the good of the security of Sinaloa and Mexico.” It said only that “high-impact incidents have occurred in recent hours in various points of Culiacán,” and that the government was working “to re-establish order and peace.”

There's serious fighting down there, they may have arrested El Chapo's son.

Maybe one of the other stories I saw is that a bunch of inmates escaped.

Mazatlan is in this same state as Sinaloa, the Sinaloa cartel is surely centralized to Culiacan.

Son of Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo' captured

Armed men were seen in several areas of Culiacán on Thursday

Mexican security forces have arrested one of the sons of notorious drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, local officials say.

They say this happened in the western city of Culiacán, the stronghold of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel.

The capture of Ovidio Guzmán López triggered heavy gun battles between suspected cartel members and the security forces across the city.

According to this tweet, they let Chapo's son go because of the violence.....I guess, if you capture one of these guys, don't broadcast it. It looked like there was some serious violence out there, I hope nobody was killed..... on twitter, there are vehicles of cartel soldiers riding in trucks into town. I guess the poppy fields are around out there, plantations and then, they bus in some people with weapons. I think Poppy fields, heroin, are there, they must destroy some of them but it seems like they could eradicate it. Maybe the problem is too big?

•Chapo’s son was LET GO after being captured by the Mexican Army. MX Govt sources tell @Reforma
that this was done to protect citizens after today’s gun battles in Culiacán

•Astonishing at so many levels. Huge impact for policy but even more for Mexico’s psyche

The reporter says this, he was probably told this. He got the info from "Reforma" which must be a major newspaper.

Still, we know reports and rumors can be false. We really do need more confirmation.
