ALCS Game Four: Astros v. Yankees
« on: October 18, 2019, 12:42:24 am »
Masahiro Tanaka walked one Astro but stranded him in the top of the first; Zack Greinke struggles in the bottom of the first, walking a run home before finally stranding Yankee ducks on the pond.

1-0, Yankees after one full inning . . .

A one-out single by Didi Gregorius comes to nothing, but it's still 1-0, Yankees, after two full . . .

A leadoff walk, a base hit, and then George Springer hits one into the left field seats and the Astros take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third . . .

The 'Stros put two more on after the three-run bomb but can't cash them in, but they lead it 3-1 in the middle of the third . . .

A one-out single (D.J. LeMahieu) and followup unintentional walk (Aaron Judge) and Zack Greinke's evening is over, the Astros bring in Ryan Pressly but still lead 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth . . .

The Yankees load the bases with one out and Ryan Pressly works his tail off to get back-to-back swinging strikeouts. The Yankees are now 0-for-5 with men on second or better tonight and 0-for-13 in that situation the past two games.

3-1, Astros after five full . . .

Runners on the corner and one out in the top of the sixth, Carlos Correa hits one into the left field seats and it's 6-1 Astros . . . .!!

They go to the bottom of the sixth with the Astros up 6-1.

Trivia from Jay Jaffe of FanGraphs: Before tonight, batters had hit just three three-run homers in this postseason. Astros now have ywo in this game . . . the last team to have two in one posteason game: the 2017 Astros, Game Five of the World Series,, by Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel . . .

The Yankees just cut the deficit in half, with a leadoff four pitch walk and Gary Sanchez hitting a two-run homer on 2-0 off Astros reliever Josh James. 6-3, Astros, the Yankees hitting in the bottom of the sixth . . .

After the Yankees went three and three in the bottom of the seventh . . .

Well, let me just share my game notes from the top of the eighth:

Astros---Adam Ottavino pitching for the Yankees. Alex Bregman: 1-1 to him; 2-2 to him; pitch on the heart of the plate and down the left field line for a leadoff double. Yuli Gurriel: 1-1 to him; veteran CC Sabathia ready in the pen; 2-2 to him; another bounder eats up LeMahieu and bounces this time into right field, Bregman to third, the boo birds rain on Ottavino. CC Sabathia pitching for the Yankees. Yordan Alvarez: 1-2 to him; bouncer to second, this one takes a hop off the grass and bounced off his body, he had ideas about throwing home, Bregman scores, it's 7-3 Astros!! Alvarez safe at first. Carlos Correa: 1-1 to him; fouled off, 1-2 to him; lines one to right, Judge has it and throws to second and it's in and out of Torres's glove! They almost had a double play. Robinson Chirinos: 1-1 to him; he's hit by the pitch, the Astros have the bases loaded!! The Yankees' wheels are off and escaping the vehicle. Aledmys Diaz pinch hits for Josh Reddick: 2-2 to him; fly to short right, Torres out, Judge calls him away and makes the catch. George Springer: 2-1 to him; Sabathia's knee flares up, he leaves the game, not the way he wants his great career to end; Jonathan Loaisiga pitching for the Yankees; Springer fouls one off; struck him out swinging. 7-3, Astros, middle eighth.

A two-out, two-base error by Alex Bregman at third on Gio Urshela's smash up the line does no real further damage. 7-3, Astros after eight full.

I think @EasyAce fell asleep at the computer. Final score 8-3 Astros.

Game 5 tomorrow 6 Central on FS1. JV on the mound. I shall sleep well tonight.

Great job as usual, @EasyAce!

P.S. Praying for Chirinos. He sustained a couple of hard whacks on his glove-side arm tonight, and JV is going to need him behind the plate tomorrow.

@AllThatJazzZ
I didn't fall asleep. I fell into outrage over a little piece of game-related news that came forth during the ninth inning and started writing what I ended up finishing this morning.

You can read all about it here.
