Appeals court rejects Trump's effort to block House from obtaining his financial records

A federal court has rejected President Trump’s appeal to block House Democrats from obtaining his financial records dating back 10 years.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld a lower court ruling clearing the way for the House Oversight Committee’s subpoena.

The 2-1 decision was handed down Friday morning.

The Oversight Committee is demanding Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, turn over Trump’s financial records.

Trump sued in the U.S. District Court for DC to block the subpoena.

Democrats are trying to determine whether Trump inflated his net worth during his failed bid to purchase the Buffalo Bills football team.

Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who is now in prison for evading taxes, testified earlier this year that Trump also lied about his assets in order to shield himself from a higher tax bill.

Republicans oppose the effort to subpoena Trump’s financial records and argue the Democrats are trying to embarrass the president and hurt him politically.
