John B. Goodenough, a renowned engineering professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contribution to the invention and development of lithium-ion batteries that power mobile phones, laptops and electric cars across the globe.

At 97, Goodenough dethroned scientist Arthur Ashkin, for the title of the oldest person to receive the Nobel Prize. Ashkin was awarded the physics prize last year at 96.

Goodenough will share the Nobel from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences with two other recipients — M. Stanley Whittingham, 77, a British-American chemistry professor at Binghamton University, State University of New York; and Japan’s Akira Yoshino, 71, an honorary fellow at chemical company Asahi Kasei Corp. and a professor at Meijo University.

Goodenough, a German-born scientist who was in London Wednesday to receive the Copley Medal from the Royal Society, said the day had already been full of excitement when he was notified about the Nobel win.

“I’m extremely happy the ion batteries have been able to help communications throughout the world,” he said.

A remarkable achievement by a remarkably named individual.
