SAN DIEGO  —

A dozen Mexican men who apparently had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in a 24-foot-long boat early Monday morning were detained by Customs and Border Protection agents after the vessel began taking on water off the coast of Point Loma.

San Diego lifeguards responded to a distress call around 3:20 a.m. after someone on the boat reported it was taking on water, San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said. Lifeguards spotted the boat close to the coast near the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University, he said.

Lifeguards first sent a boat that was capable of pumping out water, but as the dispatcher got more information a surf boat was sent to assist, Romero said.
