TOMBALL, Texas — A student at Tomball High School was rushed to the hospital Monday evening after passing out.

The 16-year-old took a hit on a vape pen and became unconscious.

Ariel Scott, a choir student at Tomball High, said the teen only took one hit after a girl handed it to him.

Juul warned over claims e-cigarette safer than smoking

WASHINGTON — Federal health authorities Monday blasted vaping company Juul for illegally pitching its electronic cigarettes as a safer alternative to smoking and ordered the company to stop making unproven claims for its products.

The Food and Drug Administration also upped its scrutiny of a number of key aspects of Juul’s business, telling the company to turn over documents about its marketing, educational programs and nicotine formula.

The FDA action increases the pressure on the nation’s best-selling vaping company, which has been besieged by scrutiny from state and federal officials since a recent surge in underage vaping. Federal law bans sales to those under 18.   ... More

At least three teens in Houston have been hospitalized with serious lung illnesses following e-cigarette use, according to the Houston health department, the first local cases of vaping-related disease affecting people around the country.

The hospitalizations all occurred within the past month and fit the profile of the national outbreak associated with the products, health officials said Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the outbreak.The CDC last Friday announced that the number of reported possible cases had more than doubled in the past week. The spike brought the number to 450 in 33 states.

In a brief, the CDC suggested people should stop using e-cigarettes.
