NATO reports death of U.S. service member in Afghanistan

A U.S. service member was killed in Afghanistan, NATO said Friday — barely a week after two U.S. Army Green Berets were killed in combat. The brief statement from the NATO Resolute Support mission said the latest death occurred Thursday but provided no further details.

The service member's identity was being withheld until family could be notified.

The announcement came as negotiations between a U.S. envoy and the Taliban appear to be close to an agreement on ending America's longest war.

We stay, this will happen. I'm glad we are leaving a contingency force but it's certainly a hard call. The people of Afghanistan basically are begging us to stay. What a great tragedy, in my prayers.

Green Beret from Idaho ID'd as 3rd US soldier killed in Afghanistan in under two weeks
By Danielle Wallace | Fox News

The identity of the third American soldier to die in Afghanistan in under two weeks was disclosed Friday — a day after President Trump confirmed a plan to withdraw at least some troops from the South-Central Asian nation once U.S. forces are assured the country will not become a haven for other terrorist groups.

Sgt. 1st Class Dustin Ard, a Green Beret from Idaho, died in Afghanistan’s Zabul Province on Thursday. He is survived by his wife, who is pregnant, as well as a young daughter. He would have turned 32 in October, the Washington Examiner reported.

Sgt. 1st Class Dustin B. Ard

The Green Beret was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Joint Base Lewis – McChord, in Washington, and was a Special Forces Communications Sergeant. He deployed twice to Afghanistan and also participated in multiple Joint Combined Exchange Training exercises in Indonesia, U.S. Army Special Operations Command spokesman Lt. Col. Loren Bymer said.
