That plane (Cessna?) looks like it took a lot of cartwheels to end up like that.  I've been most concerned about Freeport, because it was just outside of the eye wall for that 36 hours, with Cat 4 winds and rain the whole time.  There are about 50K people living there.

The death toll has to be much higher than reported and will probably never be fully known.

I would think so.  The Bahamas were just pulverized, looking at the photos.

Yup, must be.  I understand there were a lot of illegal Haitian aliens on an extremely vulnerable part of the Islands called "The Muds."  I'd be surprised if there are any survivors.  Given the low-lying nature of the islands I expect a lot of bodies won't be found until they wash up on some shore after having been swept out to sea.

And I thought Homestead looked bad after Andrew.

Not putting this lightly, but only two of Grand Bahama's islands were seemingly destroyed.

And they sure as hell had plenty of warning to get to higher ground somewhere.

Not much "higher ground," though there is some.  Freeport is considered high ground, and it's 30 ft at its highest.  I'm hoping a lot of people just got off the islands.  Probably not.  The grisly part of this hasn't even begun... 8888crybaby

Hurricane Dorian has strengthened to a Category 3 as it threatens landfall in the Carolinas

Quote
As Hurricane Dorian continues moving up the southeastern US coast, South Carolina was feeling its effects Thursday morning.

The storm had lost some of its strength after hitting the Bahamas. But it intensified again into a Category 3 storm Wednesday night, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

I think the impact is difficult for many of us to imagine.  Dorian was huge.  It basically affected every island in the Bahamas.  We hear about damage in Nassau and Freeport because these are the cities most of us know.  But the other islands -- some of which perhaps are not as populated or maybe even unpopulated -- were also hit hard.

As for evacuating to higher ground, others here have pointed out there really isn't much in the Bahamas.    Cat Island has the highest point -- 207 feet -- but the more heavily populated islands are much lower.  I'm getting conflicting reports of how high the floods were, but one said as much as 23 feet!    For islands which average 30 or so feet at their highest point, there really isn't much in the way of "higher" ground.

Wild Horses of North Carolina's Outer Banks Will Ride Out Hurricane Dorian 'Butts to the Wind'

Quote
…
The now Category 3 storm is making its way up the coast after devastating the Bahamas, and while parts of South Carolina and North Carolina are under evacuation, CNN reports, the colonial Spanish mustangs of the Outer Banks aren’t going anywhere.

According to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, which oversees the herd, the horses are able to sense the storm from a change in air pressure and know exactly what to do when it approaches: move to higher ground and group together under sturdy trees.

“They’ll likely ride out winds and rain as their ancestors did before them — in huddles, butts to the wind,” the organization told CNN, who added the horses have already begun grouping together.

"Butts to the wind”  There's probably a lot of wisdom in that stance.
