Netanyahu visits Ukraine ahead of September poll

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu embarked Sunday on an official visit to Ukraine -- from which many Israelis hail -- a month ahead of the Jewish state's elections.

Netanyahu said he was travelling at the invitation of Ukraine's recently elected President Volodymyr Zelensky, in what Israeli media reported was the first visit to the country by an Israeli premier for 20 years.

In a video released on YouTube, Netanyahu said the two men would discuss the "establishment of a free trade area, the pensions agreement and a host of other issues that will further strengthen the excellent relationship between the two countries".

More than a million people from former Soviet republics came to Israel after the Iron Curtain fell.

Ukraine elected Zelenskiy as President. He is Jewish and his election is considered a landmark.  So, this is good news. I hope advancements can be made. Two countries tested by world events.

I can't help but add an interesting sidelight, Golda Meir. Very famous, fourth Prime Minister of Israel. She was born in Kiev. And then, one could read books I am sure for the details but her family moved to the United States and she lived in Wisconsin which, in part, is probably an important part of her background. I mean, there are a number of places, the Univ. of Wisconsin at Milwaukee library for example, named for her.  In the bigger picture,  she then, moved to "Palestine" per what it was called back then in her 20s. She likewise, born in Kiev, some sources call it Ukraine, others say "Russia" for it being a part of the Russian empire back in those days.  So, I've got high hopes for Israel and Ukraine in all of this.

Netanyahu: My wife arrived in Kyiv wearing yellow and blue clothes to show her respect to Ukraine
The incident with the bread has happened unintentionally
22:56, 19 August 2019

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu stated his wife respected Ukraine and that is why she arrived in Kyiv wearing yellow and blue clothes. He said this during the video message published on Facebook page.

“I am in Ukraine now with a truly historic visit, but my trip would hardly receive such wide media coverage if the incident with the bread did not happen. Sara arrived in Kyiv wearing yellow and blue clothes, the national Ukrainian colors exactly to show her respect to this country,” he stated.

According to Netanyahu, a lot of issues were solved during the meeting.

I'm not sure what the last story is about. Bread was thrown on the floor, it was unintentional but the article doesn't make it too clear what happened. It's likely not written by an English-as-first-language speaker. There's probably not too much coverage elsewhere. Maybe in the Jerusalem Post.
