Wet, Wild And High: Lakes and Rivers Wreak Havoc Across Midwest, South

"Water, water everywhere." That line from poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge could be the mantra for rain-weary residents across the country. Some regions have seen record amounts of rain since early spring. The Mississippi River and tributaries spent months above flood stage, while all of the Great Lakes are nearly at or above historic highs.

Keith Kompoltowicz, chief of watershed hydrology for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit, says data show that the Great Lakes have been on the rise for several years, especially in recent months.

"In the months of April and May we had extremely wet weather across the Great Lakes Basin," says Kompoltowicz, "and that caused the lakes to rise very quickly this spring and brought us to where we are, either setting records or approaching records, depending on the lake."

Midwest goes from flood to drought in just 3 months

Dryness is spreading across the Midwest and Great Lakes. In the past few days some sections of the Midwest have actually been ranked as being in moderate drought conditions.

U.S. Drought Monitor has placed parts of Illinois and Iowa in moderate drought.

As of Tuesday, the U.S. Drought Monitor ranks 22 percent of the Midwest and Great Lakes at least abnormally dry. Although the moderate drought area is small in percentage, almost two percent of the Midwest is now in moderate drought.

I guess global warming has returned, right?

The point is, as soon as they can, the media starts throwing out global warming again.  Instead of being happy things are drying out, they go right back to scare tactics.  Today they are worrying, again, about all the rain and it's potential for damage. Why should anyone believe them?  I sent an email to a local Michigan "meteorologist" about the time the water in Lake Michigan had notably risen and asked what happened to the global warming.  Of course, I got no reply. :bs:

It's called geology in action.

Where does one think a lot of the soil comes from we live on?  Meteorites?

It's really not that dry people. What a bunch of hysteria.

The rain has definintely tapered off, and I suppose we would be dry, but with all we have had this spring, and not a particularly hot summer, soil moisture is still pretty good.

Most places have gotten just enough rain to break even. The crops look pretty good most places.

The algorithms the Drought Monitor uses are crap and designed to give a 'global warming' type conclusion.
