NRA Warns Trump on Background Check Support
« on: August 10, 2019, 12:39:15 am »
The Truth About Guns by John Boch Aug 08, 2019

The NRA’s embattled Executive Director Wayne LaPierre warned President Trump that promoting additional gun control would not go over well among his supporters. LaPierre, breaking from the NRA’s past tendency to maintain a low profile following news-making spree killings, reportedly made the comments in a phone call with President Trump Tuesday.

From The Greenwich Time:

President Donald Trump has repeatedly told lawmakers and aides in private conversations that he is open to endorsing extensive background checks in the wake of two mass shootings, prompting a warning from the National Rifle Association and concerns among White House aides, according to lawmakers and administration officials.

NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre spoke with Trump on Tuesday after the president expressed support for a background check bill and told him it would not be popular among Trump’s supporters, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal talks. LaPierre also argued against the bill’s merits, the officials said.

As for Republicans, despite the mainstream media’s narrative and fervent wishes, only a handful have gone wobbly on guns. Aside from Lindsey Graham, Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger has marked himself as one of the few turncoats on gun rights.

Good.  The red flag background checks have nothing to do with going wobbly on guns.  They have everything to do with going strong on finding the mentally ill before they find us.

I don't understand why this triggers such panic in the sane.

If you want to find nutcases, find nutcases and don't tie guns to it.

I already gave you the kill rate in red flag interventions in MD, and it dwarves the homicide rate in Baltimore.

If you want crazies, just round up crazies.

There are laws on the books to deal with the mentally ill. Howabout using those instead of mind police and gun grabbing?

Isn't that what this is all about?  Think about it ... what laws would have to change to allow a mandatory 72 mental health confinement?  And should everyone with any history of mental illness be given gun?  Like those requiring medication to control the voices?  Like those with no empathy for human life ... the sociopaths?  Or those with a kill list?

No one's coming for you or your gun.  I'll fight 'em if they try to do that.  happy77

There are laws on the books to deal with the mentally ill.

Clearly those laws aren't working.  They've been diluted and are ineffective.

So fix that and leave the mind police out of it.

??  The article mentions nothing about "red flag" background checks.  Notta.  A little confused as to what you are meaning here.  They are trying to implement extended background checks AND red flag laws, but this article is only referring to the background checks.

Neither extended background checks nor red flag laws are going to help Trump win any new supporters, nor is it going to help him retain his base. The NRA is absolutely correct and Trump would be wise to heed their words.

What's your understanding of the background checks referred to in this article?

The article doesn't state specifically what "extensive" background checks entail.  Therefore, I'm understanding that the so-called "extensive" background checks are in addition to the red flag laws that you brought up.

Extensive background checks and red flag laws are entirely 2 different things. Extensive background checks are background checks for ALL firearm purchases and gifts. This removes the Gun Show Loophole and requires a background check to even give a gun to a member of your own family. A background check would be required anytime a firearm's ownership changes.

Yeah... Not gonna happen. Pass all the laws you want.

The extended background check is so the Feds can get all those guns prior to 1968 or that they have lost track of into their databases.  Just because the BATF was ordered to destroy those databases, doesn't mean they did.
