McConnell rejects calls to bring Senate back early for gun debate
By Jordain Carney - 08/08/19 04:38 PM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) indicated Thursday that he will not bring the Senate back early from its five-week August recess to debate gun legislation, despite pressure from Democrats.

"We're going to have these bipartisan discussions and when we get back hopefully be able to come together and actually pass something. I want to make a law," McConnell said during an interview with Kentucky radio station WHAS.

Pressed if he was saying he would not call the Senate back before their currently scheduled Sept. 9 return date, McConnell added: "If we did that, we would just have people scoring points and nothing would happen. There has to be a bipartisan discussion here of what we can agree on."

The good news is these asshats can't agree on anything much less "meaningful" gun control  confiscation.

Good for Mitch, let's let emotions cool down first.

McConnell suggests Senate could look at assault weapons ban, background checks

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, under severe pressure from Democrats and a growing number of Republicans, suggested Thursday that the Senate could look at a ban on assault weapons and that there’s Senate support for a move to expand background checks to nearly all gun sales.

Speaking on WHAS 840 in Louisville, the Kentucky Republican said President Donald Trump called him Thursday morning and is “anxious to get an outcome and so am I.”

He said the two talked about various proposals that will be “front and center” in Senate discussions, including so-called red flag warning legislation that would keep guns from people deemed a threat by their friends and family members, as well as expanding background checks.

Weird thing is that any State is free to implement them now.  Quite a few already have.

Unless the emerging legislation is different than the bills already submitted in both chambers earlier this year, there is no federal mandate that any State implement them.  They are essentially grant programs (with unspecified dollar amounts) that lay out how they would be administered, and the rules to qualify for the funding.

When I heard Graham speaking from his local Republican Club the other evening, he referred to his new bill with Blumenthal as a "grant program" as well.
