Tougher Mexican migrant policy means fewer apprehensions as illegal crossings in U.S. drop as well

By Jon Dougherty

(NationalSentinel) Mexico’s tougher policies aimed at stopping Central American migrants from illegally crossing its territory en route to the United States have resulted in substantially fewer attempts and apprehensions, according to officials.

Mexican authorities say they apprehended 18,758 migrants in July, citing preliminary data from the country’s immigration agency, The Wall Street Journal reported. And though this figure is more than double the number from the same month last year, it is a significant decline from the 31,573 apprehended in June, a one-month record.

Mexico City noted that its tougher policies have resulted in a 40-percent reduction in migrants headed to the U.S.
