8chan owner blasts 'sinister' shutdown attempts
« on: August 07, 2019, 08:03:59 AM »
Manila (AFP) - Moves to shut down the chat forum 8chan are "sinister" and "cowardly", its owner said Wednesday after he was called to appear before US Congress to explain the hate content linked to deadly US shootings.

In a video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, Philippine-based Jim Watkins said the deadly weekend attacks in the American cities of El Paso and Dayton were a tragedy.

But he insisted 8chan had not broken any laws, and devoted most of his seven-and-a-half-minute video to criticising the subsequent moves to shut down his forum.

Watkins says his company has always cooperated with law enforcement and reports illegal speech.  He also tells us that the El Paso shooter uploaded the manifesto to Instagram and someone else uploaded it to 8chan. Wonder who? This was reported to authorities immediately.

Interesting information @EdJames. Thanks for the post.

Shutting down the web site would work for about 5 minutes.  Until the next one is up and running.

It’s down right now, because of the move by Cloudfare.

Do you believe similar discussion is not happening on other sites already?

Surprising that people are okay with eradicating free speech and ignore the facts that 8chan reported the upload from someone other than the shooter to the authorities.

Definitely related, since 8chan is a forum for Q posters....

Founder of site linked to mass shootings says he created 'a monster'

Brennan said he had no qualms about selling 8chan to Watkins who seemed liberal, fun-loving and "pretty chill". He said he stopped communicating with Watkins after his character changed and he became "a rabid conservative" supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump.

No mystery on why he wants it shut down.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out...  his staff probably made the report to their usual F_B contacts, what happened to that report is anyone's guess...  it certainly isn't what has been reported in the media....

Here is Watkins' reply to the HHSC letter:

I guess if the so tolerant liberals can cajole CC companies to deny Conservative groups access to processing credit transactions It is not unreasonable for libs to force speech they don'y like off the web.

Once they get the guns they will repeal the 1st amendment.
