Iran says a fighter jet has gone down in the south of the country near the tense Gulf region, with two pilots surviving the crash.

The semi-official Mehr news agency quoted a local official as saying the crash was caused by a technical problem.

"The fighter jet crashed due to technical issues in the Tangestan area. Its pilot and co-pilot are safe," Mehr quoted the governor of Tangestan Abdolhossein Rafiipour as saying.

The picture looks like an F-18 Hornet, which did not come into US service until years after the Mullahcracy took over.

They have an indigenously produced one called the Saeqeh-2, which is just a terrible re-design of the F-5 Tiger.

Russian engines with slightly higher thrust, more fuel capacity, longer range and slower than an F-5E. Having more modern avionics, it would be competitive with mid-60s fighters, but ...

The inlets show the F-5 ancestry, the twin tails look F-18ish, but that squashed nose ... not a graceful or an especially powerful look. An A-10 has a better look.
