"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

The only reason that 401k of yours will be screwed is if you sell at a loss.  And if you do sell and take a loss after the impressive runup for the past several years, your financial acumen is suspect in purchasing equities.

Are you not familiar with how the stock markets work?

And if your retirement plans are screwed based upon the last few months when the US finally decided to react to the unfair trade practices of China and other countries, then you do not understand how to properly plan for retirement.

Maybe it would be a safer plan for you to just plan on working instead of retiring.
@kevindavis Did you sell and take the loss?

If you did not sell, then let the rest of us know why you allowed your 401k to grow today during the 311 point gain.  Was it you did not believe what you were saying previously?

@kevindavis

According to Trump supporters, you are not supposed to be concerned about your retirement because even if it your 401(k) goes down the drain, it's a small sacrifice to make for all the good this trade war is going to do for the entire country.  To be concerned about your future is selfish and unpatriotic.

I don't bother trying to reason with these folks anymore..  At some point, when their own nest eggs go kaplooey, maybe then they will find out for themselves how wrong they have been.

So Trump should govern by not doing anything to upset anyone's 401K? Global appeasement to save our retirements?

Sorry if I'm harsh, but if you can't read a chart, you shouldn't be in the market. It was pretty obvious that the market was toppy.

...

Trump should think about the ramifications of his actions -- the downsides to some of the people he is supposed to represent.

But Trump doesn't think.  He shoots from the lip and makes decisions based on his mood at a certain moment.

The government should not take the stock markets into account when making decisions.  Investors should take government into account when making theirs.  It would be unwise and unfair to base policy decisions on protecting current gamblers.

Besides, if the markets go up or the markets go down, the net change is nothing.  Nothing is created or destroyed.  Some buyers get a better/worse deal than they would have if nothing had changed, some sellers are in the opposite position.

Another day, another +300 point gain.

Where are all those chicken-littles that saw their nest egg being destroyed?

Guess they already sold out.

Trump will make another stupid move in his temper tantrum trade war and the market will decline again.

Close Update: Stocks Post Losses for Week After Friday Slump

04:35 PM EDT, 08/09/2019 (MT Newswires) -- Major stock market indexes fell Friday as remarks from President Donald Trump cast another wave of uncertainty over the trade talks between the US and China.

The Nasdaq Composite Index led the major indexes lower, falling 1% while the S&P 500 slumped 0.7%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%.

Investor appetite for stocks appeared to slump after Trump said Friday, "we'll see whether or not we keep our meeting in September with China" to try and begin to resolve the trade war between the two economic giants.

Energy and technology shares were the leading losing sectors in the S&P 500 on Friday, each falling about 1.3%. Three of the 11 sectors of the S&P rose.

For the week, the Dow fell 0.7% while the S&P 500 slumped 0.5%. The Nasdaq fell 0.6%.

Not a major loss today, but every time Trump opens his yap, the market falls.

And a 390 point drop of the Dow today, thanks to Trump's ongoing temper tantrum trade war and the Hong Kong demonstrations.

Tell all of us: are you in the market over the short term or the long haul?

If the latter, what exactly is it you are attempting to say?

Not going to argue with anyone here anymore.  Just putting the info out there.  Believe it, fine -- don't believe it, also fine.

By the way...

Bank of America says risk of recession next year is 1 in 3

Quote
The chances of a recession in the next year have risen to about a third, in large part because of President Trump's trade war, according to a Bank of America analysis.

“Our official model has the probability of a recession over the next 12 months only pegged at about 20 percent, but our subjective call based on the slew of data and events leads us to believe it is closer to a 1-in-3 chance,” Bank of America wrote in a Friday analysis.

"Our model likely does not fully capture the threat of US-China trade tensions spiraling into a more severe trade war, which we view as the biggest downside risk for the US economy," the note said.

Dow rises 400 points on news of tariff delay, further U.S.-China trade talks

U.S. stocks rallied Tuesday morning, reversing opening losses, after the U.S. Trade Representatives office announced that new tariffs on Chinese imports, set to be imposed Sept. 1, will be delayed or scrapped altogether.

The news overshadowed concerns over slowing economic global growth and the potential for Beijing to crack down on protests in Hong Kong.

Why would Trump delay the tariffs and give up on the intake of billions more per month, from China?    *****rollingeyes*****
