Gold worth nearly $5 million has been seized by the National Crime Agency as part of an international investigation into a suspected South American drugs cartel. (National Crime Agency)

The bars, which weighed 230 pounds total, were seized by Border Force officers on June 1 when the gold was in transit from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland. It was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act after a hearing.

“We believe that this shipment was linked to drug cartels operating out of South America,” Steve McIntyre, NCA Heathrow branch commander, said. “Working with partners overseas and in the UK, we were quickly able to identify it and stop [its] onward movement.”

Amazing, I wonder how much has gotten through in the past. It does seem there are more drug busts lately.  Of course, these were gold bars, hard to think they'd ever get through customs.
