Melodramatic CNN host chokes back tears over word ‘infested’ that Trump just lobbed at Cummings

A CNN host almost broke into tears Saturday morning when reporting on and responding to President Donald Trump’s criticisms of Rep. Elijah Cummings.

According to host Victor Blackwell, the president’s criticisms of Cummings — which were that a “brutal bully” like him should spend more time taking care of his decrepit Baltimore district and less time haranguing America’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents — were rooted in racism.

“You see a pattern here?” he asked as a graphic showing the latest targets of the president’s rage appeared on the screen.

Besides Cummings, the graphic also showed members of the so-called “squad” –Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley — as well as Rep. John Lewis.

Why can’t we have a clean city? It’s a problem that has perplexed generations of mayors in Baltimore. Call it the perpetual trash nemesis.

Decades of tactics have been tried to beat it. William Donald Schaefer’s Trashball campaign urged people to ball up their debris and toss it into a receptacle like a two-point shot. Kurt L. Schmoke banked on people idolizing Cal Ripken Jr. enough to convince them to pick up after themselves as part of his “It’s Your Baltimore. Don’t Trash It!” initiative, while Sheila Dixon tried to disgust people into doing better with photos of rats. Her “Cleaner, Greener Baltimore Initiative”also included adding hundreds of trash cans around the city and reducing trash pickup to focus more on recycling. Then there was Martin O’Malley, who made a big splash showing up to neighborhoods like a rock star clad in a jumpsuit and hanging from the back of a trash truck as part of an eight-day clean-up tour early in his administration.

Yet, here we are again in a mess of a city. Food containers, balled up clothes, paper, banana peels, plastic bags and tons of other pieces of litter line the shoulders of roads, pile up in alleys and are strewn across fields and yards. Not only is it unsightly and contributes to a rodent problem, but it can create a glum and gloomy feel in a time when the city is already facing self-esteem issues because of high crime and the scandal surrounding the University Maryland Medical System and Mayor Catherine Pugh, who’s now on an indefinite leave, and her Healthy Holly books. If anything, the city needs a major scrubbing to help restore some of its faith and image.

But a cultural shift in the city needs to take place if Baltimore is to become home to clean streets and alleys. A change where people say it’s not OK to throw that hamburger wrapper out of my window because I have pride in my city. Those who don’t live in the city need to think about how they’d feel if somebody threw trash in their backyard as if it were the community landfill. To put it simply, too many people need a lesson in basic decency. And it’s people of all races, ages and socioeconomic backgrounds who are culprits of the widespread littering, which, by the way, is against the law.

At one point in NYC, the Irish were responsible for a great deal of violent crime in the Five Points section of NYC in lower Manhattan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Irish involved were all white. I'm part Irish, but facts are facts.  The Irish pretty much cleaned themselves up.  Other demographics should think strongly about doing the same.

I saw Blackwell when he spoke of Trump's rant against Cummings, said what he did about Baltimore.  Blackwell was okay at the beginning, then toward the end of his comments, he stopped speaking. 

I thought he must be putting something up for people to see, then I realized he was about to lose his composure and cry; there was a tremble in his face muscles; this was real not contrived, there was a long dead space; finally he began to speak and related he grew up in Baltimore, went to school and college there.

Earlier in his talk, he spoke of Trump using the word, "infested" and played numerous times Trump spoke of places being "infested".  Trump has that word to use when he doesn't like a place.  If that area did not vote for him, he says it is "infested".

Trump said:  “Cumming[sic] District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”  Well, Cummings leaves Washington every day and goes back to Baltimore - he does not live in Washington:

"Mr. Cummings responded on Twitter shortly afterward, saying that he was a vigorous advocate for his district. “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily,” he wrote. “Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

There was a crime series on Netflix a while back that was filmed in Baltimore and was about crime in Baltimore. They didn't pull any punches,either.

GREAT show with great writing and great acting. Seems like nobody showed up just to get a paycheck.

The title is "The Wire". Well worth watching.

What a concept, eh? Leaders taking the initiative to MAKE BALTIMORE GREAT AGAIN. Then passing along what they learned to help other once-great American cities. But why do that when they can continue in victimhood? They'd have to give up the issue if they addressed the problem. We all know what's going on here.
