Coast Guard member to receive international honor for 'exceptional bravery at sea'

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. —

A U.S. Coast Guard stationed on Cape Cod will receive an international accolade for his heroic actions which rescued four fishermen from a life raft after their boat sank off the coast of New England in 2018.

Petty Officer Michael Kelly will be honored with the 2019 International Maritime Organization Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

Just before 8 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2018, Coast Guard officials received a distress signal from the Aaron and Melissa II, which was ported in Portland. The vessel was located about 55 miles south of Rockland.
