One of the few things liberals still have is the need to feel morally superior to the "other".... in this case the "other" is half the population of the country. If you can convince yourself that the other half of the country are knuckle-dragging, tobacco spitting racists, you don't have to analyze or explain all the thoroughly nutty things you believe as a liberal.
