Reality Shows That Are Totally Fake

Like it or not, reality television is everywhere. From HGTVâ€™s home renovation shows to Pawn Stars, a huge space on network television is now taken up by real people, living real lives, doing real thingsâ€¦ that, honestly, arenâ€™t quite so real. When you peek behind the curtain things are really messy and we find out the lengths producers go to create these fake reality shows and try to keep the truth hidden from viewers. Scenes are staged. Scripts are written. Situations are edited to make good people look bad, and rude people look nice.

Read these facts, but be ready because youâ€™re never going to look at your favorite reality shows the same way again. And donâ€™t forget to SHARE these crazy revelations of fake reality shows with your friends so theyâ€™ll at least be in on the secret too!

Okay, looks like all of them, to some degree. The least fake was the only one of the shows I'd actually watched, Fixer Upper.

The only truly unscripted thing on television is live sports... and even that, I get suspicious about it sometimes.

Most of the shows like Duck Dynasty or Real Housewives (itself a knockoff of the totally fictional dramedy of years ago, Desperate Housewives) or Kardashians are basically sitcoms with the actors/actresses playing semi-fictional versions of themselves. I wouldn't necessarily call it "fake" any more than I Love Lucy accurately portrayed Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's marriage.

The fact that so many house shows show up on that list should be a scathing indictment of the genre.

A few aren't so much totally fake as they are perhaps somewhat incomplete or misleading.

And not one ghost-hunting show made the list? Come on...

Tarek and Christina, are a legit local business, that did well on TV.

My wife and I watched for awhile. Figured out the main plot.

The main plot is they have little time to inspect and make an offer. They get sgtarted, only to learn they overlooked (and underestimated) major repair/replacements.

Like roofs, major structural things. But in the end, they make a reasonable profit.

He has a good reputation in the real estate business, btw.

The other couple in Waco came along to TV, also.

We like this type of TV program.

LOL! I am only vaguely familiar with three of them... And only really watched two...

My first paid writing gig was as a blogger for a now defunct website which was bought out by a larger site than the big whale site.

We synopsizes all the great reality shows before people were doing it. Survivor. Amazing Race, Big Brother, The Bachelor, etc. And we figured out that a lot of these shows HAD to be semi scripted and that casting directors look for certain types of people to put on every show. Like the good girl, the bad boy, the girl who is a witch, the geek, the one who is a goof ball , the one who is as dumb as a box of rocks but has a heart of gold.

This author of this piece hasnâ€™t been watching reality TV since the late 90s. Of course itâ€™s ALL semi scripted if not totally.

Just so you all know how deep this rabbit hole goes, what most TV historians believe to be the first reality show ever on American TV, â€œAn American Familyâ€ which ran from 1973 on PBS was later found to be very edited. Over 300 hours of TV were shot, only 13 hours were broadcast. What happened to the rest? It didnâ€™t fit the narrative the producers wanted.

Yes, it was groundbreaking tv. But it WAS edited.

When I used to bet on sports I became convinced that both football and the NBA were corrupted by the point spread. Now both sports are getting into bed with the gambling industry. In a strange way, the whole thing might turn more honest as a result.

A friend of mine, was once a Losing Act, on the "Gong Show"

Now he is a professional speaker, stand up comedian, magician etc.

Only 3 we watch and know full well they are fake.

Pawn Stars
We have more fun just pointing out all the fake stuff. Like the guy that brings a signed guitar in that viewers in the know are familiar with it being on display at the Hard Rock Cafe the day before. Brought in as a fake prop.

Counting Cars
Only because I love restored classic cars.

Tanked
Great cast, but those tank builds are so scripted. And being owners of large custom built salt water tanks ourselves, we spot their mistakes all the time, and every build has a manufactured deadline to add drama

As an addition, I so very much more enjoy the reality I get subscribed to youtube channels, that I really doubt that 'RealityTV' would work for me anymore.

I watch a whole lot of individual creators doing bushcraft, homesteading, farming and ranching, offroad and street racing... and while sure, there are some set up scenarios, by far and away the real thing is the REAL thing. I know. Been there done that.

The House Hunters franchise was my favorite. Would get a kick out of these so-called prospective buyers rejecting the "dummy" houses for the silliest reasons. So you don't like the paint on the walls? Get some paint in a color you like and paint. I did that with mine. I doubt any existing house is perfect and I would imagine most buyers make changes before or after they move in.

An obviously phony series. But I enjoyed these shows only to see what some homes looked like -- maybe to get an idea or two for my own humble abode. Alas, now many of the episodes feature gay "couples." So I don't watch as much as I once did. Ick!

About the only one I could ever tolerate was Iron Chef, mainly because it never took itself too seriously.

Shark Tank is faked? I know real money is invested in the participants.

I guess the faking part could be that the sharks review the investments and people in a dress rehearsal, but still ...its real money.
