Houston Chronicle by CHEVEL JOHNSON and JANET McCONNAUGHEY 7/10/2019

A storm swamped New Orleans streets and paralyzed traffic Wednesday as concerns grew that even worse weather was on the way: a possible hurricane that could strike the Gulf Coast and raise the Mississippi River to the brim of the city's protective levees.

The storm was associated with a broad area of disturbed weather in the Gulf that forecasters said was on track to strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend. The system was expected to become a tropical depression by Thursday morning, a tropical storm by Thursday night and a hurricane on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Lines of thunderstorms associated with the system ranged far out in into the Gulf and battered New Orleans, where as much as 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain fell over a three-hour period Wednesday morning, forecasters said.

Mississippi and Texas were also at risk of torrential rains.

In New Orleans, streets turned into small, swift rivers that overturned garbage cans and picked up pieces of floating wood. Water was up to the doors of many cars. Other vehicles were abandoned. Kayakers paddled their way down some streets.

Chandris Rethmeyer lost her car to the flood and had to wade through water about 4 feet (1.22 meters) deep to get to safety. She was on her way home after working an overnight shift when she got stuck behind an accident in an underpass and the water started rising.

Certainly doesn't look like much progress has been made as far as putting in flood control structures.  Looks like this may be another bad year for areas in Louisiana and Mississippi.
Romans 12:16-21

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I was going to Montgomery County that backs up to Harris County (Houston), this Saturday to meet Sunday with the man who checks my townhouse and take he and wife to lunch, but I think by tomorrow, weather reports will include Harris County and Montgomery in the heavy rain from this weather system on Saturday and Sunday.  I read people in Houston are already out in stores buying what they need for this one.  I will decide tomorrow whether to go or not as more weather reports come in.

Louisiana doesn't have tornadoes.  They have waterspouts.

The National Weather Service confirmed nine tornadoes ripped through five Louisiana parishes Wednesday, among them the twister that destroyed Jimmie Davis State Park in Jackson Parish.

We will not go there Saturday.  It is not an emergency trip, can go there any time, will go there next weekend if weather is okay then.

Probably a wise choice.  Weather people are talking up the uncertainty in the path due to lack of organization in the storm so far.

A 20 foot project levee protects the city. Floodwalls and levees are constantly upgraded to maintain that project height.

The top highest floods are:
(1) 21.27 ft on 04/25/1922
(2) 21.05 ft on 05/11/1912
(3) 21.00 ft on 04/25/1927
(4) 20.50 ft on 05/18/1927
(5) 20.05 ft on 03/03/1916
(6) 19.99 ft on 06/08/1929
(7) 19.98 ft on 02/10/1950
(8) 19.78 ft on 05/01/1945
(9) 19.42 ft on 03/29/1903

This is such non-news.

New Orleans is, was and will always be under this threat.

If you live in a city some parts of which are eight feet below sea level floods are likely when it rains!

Here is SE Texas this forcast looks a lot brighter than yesterday.  Of course we know how unprecitable these are.  Max sustained winds at landfall are down from 85 to 75 mph at landfall.  WHICH.... and I can attest, is a hell of a lot of difference.

From my perspective (and short term) Sabine Pass eastward to NOLA should hunker down.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

True, but they don't always have the timing of a hurricane matching the river swollen from massive flooding upstream.

California adds  the risks of deadly fires, and occasional deadly earthquakes, and rare windstorms.

Worse may be preventable diseases from unscreened immigrants, anti-vac parents, drug addicts, etc.

It was always fascinating to me to look up a couple of blocks from Bourbon St and see a massive Container ship coming down the Missisip, all the while standing in a BOWL.

And that is the sad truth.

After Katrina I have a friend that  said they need to move New Orleans.  That's a nice thought...but where would it be moved to? (and please don't say Texas)
