Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released four policy considerations to fix the illegal immigration crisis on the southern border after a volatile visit to the border earlier this week.
The New York Democrat suggested first that the Trump administration "reinstate U.S. humanitarian aid in the Northern Triangle." She said the U.S. should treat the countries in Latin America as real partners.
"Climate change: There is broad consensus from military to activists that resource strains (droughts, famine, etc) & nat disasters are drivers of refugees," Ocasio-Cortez said was her second policy recommendation. "People are fleeing places that were once livable &are no longer. It will get worse the longer we do nothing #GreenNewDeal."
The freshman congresswoman also suggested that the U.S. decriminalize border crossings.
"Border policy: As @JulianCastro mentioned in the #DemDebate, it’s time to repeal Section 1325 & 1326, the statutes this admin is using to mindlessly throw people in cages," she said. "We have to take these proceedings out of criminal code & into civil code. Torture accomplishes nothing."
Her last policy proposal was to create public investment to create jobs for immigrants and citizens. The congresswoman did not specify whether the jobs investment would be accessible for illegal immigrants.
