Supreme Court rules Peace Cross war memorial can stand
« on: June 20, 2019, 02:52:06 pm »
Quote
The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a Peace Cross war memorial on public land outside Washington, D.C., can stand, determining in a 7-2 decision that it does not violate the Constitution.

Residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland and the American Humanist Association had sued to have the cross taken down, but the court determined that factors including the history of the memorial support the notion that it is not religious in nature.

“For nearly a century, the Bladensburg Cross has expressed the community’s grief at the loss of the young men who perished, its thanks for their sacrifice, and its dedication to the ideals for which they fought,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the court’s opinion. ...

GREAT news!  And of much more significance than many will surmise.

This ruling will compel the left to go to their alternate plan B in such cases - vandalism.

About time someone slaps down these malcontents determined to obliterate every symbol of history or Christianity.  Good job SCOTUS!

I do wish though that the court would have said something like "yes, the cross is a religious symbol and if you don't like it, too bad."

I'm guessing that Ginsburg and Sotomayor are the dissenters.  Kagan and Breyer get it right from time to time.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

This was nice to read and something that needs to be said more and more often to the minority malcontents that are constantly offended.

Gorsuch’s concurring opinion, noted that an “offended observer” does not have standing to sue.

Didn't the Court rule this only applies to "old" monuments but not new ones?

Yes, quite clearly.

Yes, quite clearly.

Thanks for that!  I have trouble seeing through media spin sometimes and I find the legalese of opinions a bit difficult to understand clearly enough.
