The Texas Minute 6/20/2019
« on: June 20, 2019, 02:28:06 pm »
Good morning – Here is today's Texas Minute. Michael Quinn Sullivan

The crony special prosector’s long and drawn-out political persecution of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton took another blow on Wednesday morning. Brandon Waltens reports the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied them a rehearing over last years’ decision over payment of the appointed prosecutors. In other words, the media-seeking liberals appointed to execute the shady securities-law case against Paxton must decide whether they will continue with less compensation.

You might remember that case was brought by former Republican State Rep. Byron Cook (a political opponent of Paxton) and it centered on the peculiar theory that Paxton – unrelated to his official actions – should be prosecuted for professional behavior a federal court has specifically said doesn’t break any law. The criminal prosecution has moved forward, without an actual crime being committed, by special prosecutors appointed by a disgraced former judge who had long and publicly opposed Paxton’s conservative politics.

In a Sunday interview with WFAA-Dallas, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he doesn’t know why there’s criticism coming from Texas conservative groups over the results of the 86th regular legislative session. But grassroots activist JoAnn Fleming of Tyler writes in a new commentary Patrick and Gov. Greg Abbott know exactly why but “they simply do not care.” She then outlines the GOP’s squandered opportunities and outright betrayals.

“We had a purple legislative session because too many Republican elected officials have turned purple. Now, they are putting Texas at risk in 2020.” – JoAnn Fleming, Grassroots America - We the People

In a commentary by Baylor senior Grant Hillman we learn how his university’s commencement ceremonies this year were hijacked by the leftist political agenda of a Fort Worth minister... and what it might mean for Baptists.

“God, give [the graduates] the moral imagination to reject the old keys we are trying to give them to a planet that we are poisoning by running it on fossil fuels and misplaced priorities – a planet with too many straight, white men like me behind the steering wheel, while others have been expected to sit quietly in the back of the bus.” – Dan Freeymer, Pastor of Missional Engagement at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth

In what part of the Bible can we find out more about this “moral imagination”? Perhaps the New Leftist Version’s Book of AOC or the Siren Song of Sanders?

Celebrating another victory for local grassroots over outside special interests, Erin Anderson reports conservative activists filled the Plano City Council chamber to witness the swearing-in of the two new council members they helped elect in contentious runoff races. Shelby Williams and Lily Bao took their oaths of office to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd.

On the other side of the Metroplex, a big business is getting a special tax deal at the expense of local taxpayers. Robert Montoya reports Ben E. Keith – a food and beverage distributor – is getting a property tax reduction of up to 50 percent from both the City of Fort Worth and Tarrant County on improvements to their existing facilities.

Funny how such deals aren’t available to home owners and small businesses.

Meanwhile, Montoya notes, Tarrant County Commissioners Court did vote 3-2 for the sheriff’s office to continue participating in a federal immigration enforcement program.

The Odessa City Council will consider issuing nearly $93 million of debt via certificates of obligation. Matt Stringer reports this would circumvent the need for voter approval of a bond proposal, denying citizens the opportunity to decide whether public debt should be incurred to pay for the projects.

Right on MQS!  Right on!  That's exactly how I see it as well.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
- J. R. R. Tolkien
