AOC says US also ran concentration camps during World War II
by John Gage
 | June 18, 2019 08:38 PM

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended her statement that the U.S. is running concentration camps on the southern border by saying the U.S. also ran concentration camps during World War II.

“There is a very clear academic consensus on what constitutes a concentration camp and that is the mass detention of a community of people without a trial or due process," the New York Democrat told CNN's Manu Raju on Tuesday. “I think it’s pretty universally not controversial to say that the administration is doing exactly that and meets the academic requirement for what a concentration camp is."

“No, no. While concentration camps were employed, during that time concentration camps were also utilized all over the world including in the United States, with the Japanese internment," she added.

The silence in terms of Republicans correctly stating facts, reinforces how weak the GOP is now.

Japanese, German and Italiens were internedin the US, AFTER Pearl Harbor was attacked and war was declared on the US.

My FIL, sone off Italian immigrants, enlisted just like my father did.

Never a word from my Italian-American wife's side, about split loyalty, of against America like this AOC ingrate.

Yes,she is,but she is also right. The fact that we did not operate our concentration camps with the inhumanity and the brutality of the Japanese or the Germans does nothing to change the FACT that we held people, many of whom were American citizens born here,in prisons who had committed no crimes at all. They were imprisoned because they were of a Asian race, and easily identifiable as Asians. Almost all of them lost their homes, their businesses, and everything they had worked hard to acquire. Many were multiple-generation Americans, too.

Yes,it is also a FACT that is rarely spoken that we also held German and Italian citizens in concentration camps during WW-2. The prime differences is that many of these people were recent immigrants that didn't have American citizenship. I have read that most of these German and Italian prisoners had been investigated by the FBI and there were reasons to suspect their loyalty. Not sure I believe all that, though I supposed it almost has to have been true in SOME cases, and when you stop and look at it you pretty much HAVE to wonder why the Asians got so much recognition for the suffering they had to live through, and there is almost no mention at all of the German or Italians that went through the same processes.

@sneakypete is correct.  But, for Ms. AOC to conflate death camps with what the socialists did in Europe is obscene.  And, of course, there is the fact that victims in Europe did not volunteer to be placed in camps like those illegally crossing our borders are doing.

@Sanguine

For about 99 percent of the illegals detained in "OUR concentration camps",it is more like being moved into a comfortable retirement home with all the luxuries of the wealthy than it is being interned in a prison camp. They never had it so freaking good before in their lives..

PLUS,THEY ARE COMING HERE IN ORDER TO BE SENT TO ONE. It's not like they are trying to escape America, are caught, and then sent there to be worked to death as they die of starvation and untreated diseases.

Not that this goofy bitch is smart enough to realize that.

There were two kinds of camps here - detention camps for those considered potentially hostile foreign nationals (there were nearly as many Germans and Italians interned as Japanese) and relocation centers.

My understanding is those in detention facilities were offered the chance to return to their home countries, and many did.

The relocation centers were supposed to be holding facilities for those of Japanese ethnicity until they could find a home in a location east of an established line, if they could, to get them out of the exclusion zone. Obviously most, if not all, had no place east to go so spent the duration of the war in the centers. Many ended up losing everything they owned.

As with so many other periods in history where behaviors seem indefensible today none of us know what the general mood was on the west coast at the time. But there at least should have been measures put in place to protect these peoples' property from the shysters who moved in to profit from their situation.
