It's been three months since the Trump administration directed NASA to put humans on the moon by 2024, and the space agency has finally released an estimate for how much it will cost: $20 billion to $30 billion.

In an interview with CNN Business on Thursday, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine  -- for the first time -- put a price tag on the entire Artemis endeavor. Artemis would put Americans back on the moon four years ahead of schedule, in 2024 instead of 2028.

Reaching the $30 billion figure would require Congress to put an additional $4 to $5 billion into the NASA budget every year for the next five years. NASA's yearly budget typically hovers around $20 billion.
