“MANY CRITICAL QUESTIONS UNANSWERED”

Shortly after 9:00 a.m., House Permanent Subcommittee on Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) opened a scheduled hearing based on the “Mueller report” which Schiff claimed demonstrated nefarious ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Completed in March and made public in April, the report, generated from a 22-month investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, said that “The investigation did not establish that the contacts described in Volume I, Section IV, supra, amounted to an agreement to commit any substantive violation of federal criminal law-including foreign-influence and campaign-finance laws, both of which are discussed further below.  The Office therefore did not charge any individual associated with the Trump Campaign with conspiracy to commit a federal offense arising from Russia contacts, either under a specific statute or under Section 371 ‘s offenses clause” (p. 189).

Schiff said that the Kremlin attempted to “cover up” a potentially-incriminating business transaction associated with an abandoned plan to build a “Trump Tower” in Moscow. He also cited a meeting at Trump Tower in New York on June 9, 2016 among Donald Trump, Jr.; then-campaign manager Paul Manafort; Jared Kushner, now the president’s senior adviser; and a Russian lawyer, who was found to have connections with Fusion GPS, the firm which commissioned the Russia “dossier” of opposition research on Trump and Russia for the Clinton campaign and DNC.

Schiff did not mention the dossier in his opening statement.
