The crash site is said to be 54-story office building in midtown Manhattan, at Seventh Avenue and West 49th Street.

About 30 minutes ago, the helicopter went down and caught fire.  The @fdny sent a massive response and put the fire out quickly. Right now the concern is the structural integrity of the building. News reports and Tweets sugges the buildings around 7th and 51st are being evacuated

Which is a sensible precaution.  One injury reported so far.

Lance Koonce   @LHKoonce

787 7th ave, #midtown NYC. We’re 1 block south. 20 mins ago there was a loud sound like a too-low #helicopter & I looked up and saw sheet of flame on roof and then smoke.  News reports saying helicopter/small plane crash onto roof which would be consistent with what I heard/saw.

Governor Cuomo on right now stating that helicopter made a "hard landing" which started a fire on the roof of 787 Seventh Avenue.

Fire is out and/or under control.  NO INJURIES.  Building evacuated.

Find it hard to believe that anyone on that chopper wasn't hurt in that landing.

My cynicism has no limit.   But, I'm gonna wait on this one.

I have the utmost respect for first responders. But if  I chose that as a profession...it wouldn't be in NYC. The logistics are a nightmare.

The New Yorkers need to be grateful that anyone would do the job.

Crashed helicopter pilot was not licensed to fly in poor conditions
by Tim Pearce | June 11, 2019 01:57 PM

The pilot of a helicopter that crashed in Manhattan on Monday was not licensed to be in the air at the time.

The pilot, identified as Timothy McCormack, died in the crash. While a veteran pilot, he did not have the required certification to fly in poor weather with low visibility, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

McCormack was not "instrument rated," a necessity to fly in weather that cuts visibility to less than 3 miles. The weather in New York City on Monday was gloomy and rainy. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash.
