Saturday was the swan song for little Weiser Airpark, and practically the entire flock showed up.

“You don’t meet a stranger out here,” Glenn Sheffield said, shielding his eyes to watch another small plane rise into the sky just above the treeline, and bank as it climbed above U.S. 290 — just a couple hundred yards from the end of the runway.

In a world of tarmacs and thunderously loud jet aircraft Weiser is a relic. No control tower; pilots just radio in and out to make sure no one is in the way. The flight school operating out of it, up until a recent rebuild, had porch swings out front where anyone could just show up to watch comings and goings.

“This is the only airport I know of where you can come straight up to the runway and watch the planes takeoff,” instructor Danny Hoffman said as he fueled up for one last lesson. The flight school will move to Brookshire.

Other plane owners will move on to Hooks or other airports, but admit they will not be the same as Weiser. Tenants called it “the friendliest airport in the United States,” a motto the owners wore with pride.
