NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A man has been arrested after authorities say he was plotted to detonate explosive devices in Manhattan’s Times Square.

Police sources tell CBS2 that the suspect was taken into custody by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes both the NYPD and FBI.

Sources say the man expressed an interest in buying explosives that he was allegedly planning to use in New York; specifically in the Times Square area.

Police then set up an undercover sting operation to catch the suspect when he went to purchase the weapons. ...

... The suspect was reportedly captured during an undercover sting when he tried to purchase guns without serial numbers on Thursday. In addition to the grenades, he had reportedly wanted to obtain a suicide vest and guns, according to an unnamed senior law enforcement official who spoke with WNBC-TV. According to this source, the suspect had initially considered targeting politicians in both New York City and Washington, D.C., but eventually decided to focus on Times Square instead.  ...

A Bangladeshi immigrant is being held without bail after allegedly plotting a terrorist attack on Times Square in New York City.

Ashiqul Alam, a 22-year-old native of Queens, is considered a lawful permanent U.S. resident despite being a citizen of Bangladesh. Instead of peacefully assimilating to U.S. society, he allegedly plotted a vicious massacre with accomplices that turned out to be federal agents.

He was caught last Thursday allegedly buying illegal guns with no serial numbers to use during his rampage, according to the charging papers. The documents also claim that he wanted to blow up the new World Trade Center “probably [with] a rocket launcher, like a huge one.”  ...

After describing more facts of this case, the article veers into blasting the Koch brothers for wanting to bring in immigrants, or something. In any event, funny how this case pretty much dropped off the radar.
