Have you heard of Witold Pilecki?
A new book, “The Auschwitz Volunteer: Beyond Bravery†(Aquila Polonica: 2012), documents, in his own words, Pilecki’s remarkable exploits, and I can’t think of a better gift to give yourself for Chanukah.
Pilecki was a Polish army captain who volunteered at age 39 for one of the singular missions of World War II: to get into Auschwitz.

Polish Army Captain Witold Pilecki "volunteered" to get himself arrested so he could learn what was happening in the Auschwitz death camp. While incarcerated, he smuggled out reports to the Polish government in exile.
Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz unveiled the stone-and-metal monument for Captain Witold Pilecki on Saturday near the spot where he let himself be caught by the occupying Nazi Germans in September 1940.
Pilecki's son, Andrzej Pilecki, daughter, Zofia Pilecka-Optulowicz and other relatives were joined by hundreds of Warsaw residents and officials at the ceremony.

It sounds like after the war, he was eventually put to death by the Soviets. I never knew about this and as stated above, a new book covers his life. He got word out of what was going on in that death camp.

OTD in 1948, the Soviets murdered Captain Witold Pilecki. This Polish hero infiltrated Auschwitz to liberate the German death camp, giving the Allies the first report about the Holocaust.
