If one continues reading at CNN,  authorities believe a parcel exploded just a while ago, nail bomb or a car accident... so some sort of terrorist attack.

(CNN)An explosion in the city of Lyon on Friday evening has injured at least seven people.

The small blast occurred around 5:30 pm local time (11:30 am ET) in a central shopping area, near the intersection of Victor Hugo road and Sala road. Its cause has not been fully determined yet.

French President Macron characterized the explosion as an attack, telling an interviewer this evening, "I'm late because there was an attack in Lyon."

"As far as I can say there are no victims — there are wounded," he added.

France Lyon: 'Parcel bomb' injures pedestrians

A suspected parcel bomb has exploded in the centre of the eastern French city of Lyon, injuring 13 people.

Those hurt in the explosion on Victor-Hugo Street, including a girl aged eight, appear to have suffered superficial injuries.

Police are hunting a cyclist who was seen leaving the parcel outside a bakery on a street corner, reports say.

Anti-terrorist prosecutors have taken over the investigation in the country's third-biggest city. ...

The device, which was reportedly full of screws, nuts and bolts, exploded around 17:30 (15:30 GMT) on the street in the historic city centre, between the Saone and Rhone rivers.

Reports say a man aged between 30 and 35 arrived on a bicycle and left the bag. He is said to have been wearing a face mask and dark glasses. ...

Jihadist gun and bomb attacks have killed more than 250 people in France since 2015 and the country remains on high alert, with military patrols a regular feature of security in cities including Lyon.

This guy from the picture in Mountaineer's posting looks pretty pale, the bomb apparently was not that damaging. Is there the chance this has nothing to do with Islamic terrorism?  That's to say, the bomb sounds a bit "amateurish".

Anyway, the latest update is there is a nationwide search for this guy, it sounds like they have very little on him.

None of the injuries from yesterday's blast are life-threatening, I hope, none the injuries are not bad.

...   Sources close to the investigation suspected the explosive was acetone peroxide, or APEX, a volatile compound used in the deadly Paris attacks on November 13, 2015.

Investigators recovered small screws, ball bearings and batteries along with a printed circuit and a remote-controlled trigger device. Officials later said the charge was relatively weak.

Thirteen people were wounded in the blast - eight women, four men and a 10-year-old girl - of whom 11 needed hospital treatment. ...

 French police have arrested four people over an explosion in the heart of the southeastern city of Lyon last week which injured 13 people, authorities said Monday.

The suspected bomber, a 24-year-old Algerian citizen, was arrested along with his mother, his father and another Algerian student who is a family friend, according to Paris prosecutors.

The suspect is an IT student previously unknown to police, Lyon's mayor Gerard Collomb said. ... More at France24

The suspect in the Lyon bombing finally confessed after 48 hours of intense questioning by French police, admitting that he planted the device that left 13 injured on May 24.

The 24 year-old IT student admitted to fabricating the parcel bomb, stating that he planned the attack weeks ago. He claims to be a lone wolf attacker, with no outside assistance.

In late March, he bought the explosive triacetone and steel ball bearings, before purchasing electric wiring in early April. He bought a remote control device and batteries two weeks later in May. It was one of these purchases that gave the police the critical clue.

“We have enough evidence – including his DNA – to get him,” a police source told Reuters ... Rest of story
