What Orban Wants: Inside Hungary’s EU Strategy

Despite Budapest’s bluster against Brussels, Hungarians are committed Europhiles. How does that square with Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s anti-immigrant vision?

As European elections loom, the streets of Budapest are festooned with orange billboards — the colour of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party. “Let’s support Viktor Orban’s plans against immigration,” they shout.

By recent standards, such slogans are tame. Gone are the notorious billboards targeting European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Hungarian-born US financier George Soros.

During a taxpayer-funded campaign launched in February, those posters showed Juncker and Soros smiling menacingly above the slogan: “You have the right to know what Brussels is planning.”
