Trump Cancels $929 Million Grant for California Bullet Train

(Bloomberg) -- The Trump administration officially canceled $929 million in federal grants earmarked for California’s ambitious high-speed rail project, escalating tensions between the federal government and the most-populous U.S. state.

Federal Railroad Administrator Ronald Batory said in a letter Thursday to Brian Kelly, the chief executive officer of the state agency running the project, that California has failed to show progress and meet requirements under the agreements for the funds. Governor Gavin Newsom, through a spokesman, vowed a court fight.

"It is now clear that California has no foreseeable plans, nor the capability, to pursue that statewide HSR System as originally proposed," Batory wrote.

Cali canceled their match, so this was entirely expected.

Now we are getting somewhere.

Let's tackle next a few other projects similar to those in Boston and NY that have nothing to do with the federal system, so should have never been funded by other states to begin with.

Most expensive US infrastructure projects
California High-Speed Rail

California’s plan to build a high-speed bullet train connecting parts of the state has caused controversy over its cost.

According to a report from the state’s High Speed Rail Authority, a line in California’s Central Valley, which is under construction, will cost $12.4 billion – up from initial estimates of $10.6 billion. The entire Central Valley segment is expected to cost more than $20 billion.

The initial plan was to build a line connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles, which would cost $79 billion, the report stated. However, Gov. Gavin Newsom pared down the project earlier this year, concentrating on a line connecting Bakersfield to Merced.

President Trump has criticized the state over the train, on which he said “many billions of dollars” had been wasted.

Meanwhile, the Federal Rail Authority said it would withhold more than $900 million in promised federal funds as it says the project continues to fail to meet critical goals.

The Big Dig

The Big Dig refers to a project that was undertaken in Boston, aimed at improving roadways. It consisted of the construction of a subterranean highway, bridges, as well as the extension of Interstate 90.

The project started in 1991 and was completed in Dec. 2007. It was estimated to have cost about $14.8 billion upon completion. However, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced in 2012 that the cost was closer to $24 billion, including interest on debt.

Long Island Rail Road Project

New York City is in the process of creating a new train station under Grand Central Terminal, with a connection to the Long Island Rail Road – a plan called “East Side Access.”

The idea is to offer easier commutes between Long Island and the east side of Manhattan. It is one of the largest transportation projects currently underway in the country, according to the MTA.

The project will cost more than $11 billion, which is $1 billion more than a previous 2014 estimate.

Construction began more than 10 years ago, but it is unlikely to be fully completed until the end of 2022.

Second Avenue New York City Subway

Another New York City transportation project is among the most expensive. The plan to build a subway along Manhattan’s Second Avenue also included modernizing certain stations, in addition to the creation of new ones.

That project was completed in 2017, and is estimated to have cost about $4.5 billion.

Meanwhile, a second phase is still in the works, which is expected to cost another $4.5 billion. The city hopes Phase Two will be completed in 10 years.

I am guessing they have plenty of capability as well as plans to spend the money buying up wasteland lots now owned by their relatives, and giving contracts for kickbacks to companies researching land titles, water rights,EPA regulations, etc, etc, etc.

I'm betting by the time they got through they would need another 900 million.

After all,900 million ain't what it used to be.

The estimated Federal burden of the $24 billion cost is 60%, or $14.4 billion.
The project was loaded with abuse. I know of two:
  • People who lived near the construction were given new beds, to help them sleep better through the noise.
  • Construction equipment that broke was not repaired; it was abandoned so that new equipment could be used.
My father is a retired union Reagan-democrat who lives in Minnesota. I told him about the costs and the wastes. His initial reply was
"but think of all the jobs that have been created"

I explained that there are 333 million people in this country. Every $1 billion in Federal spending costs each American $3. Corporate taxes are passed on to the consumer as higher prices. Thus, a $14 billion dollar Federal project would roughly cost him, and mom, $42 each. For a road that he will never use. He responded
"that's outrageous. How did this boondoggle ever get started?"

Good job, never should hafve been approved in the first place.

@verga

If stuff like that is never approved, how are the politicians business partners and relative supposed to make millions from selling the scrub land they bought for pennies so the railroad would get the right of way?

Building rail lines used to be commonplace. Simple. Existing technology.

But the cancellation of this "high speed" project, proves the nation is losing competency, in particular California, and Government.

Another example; tthe New California Driver License/ID card. The DMV  messed up big tiime, on this too.

You don't see big headlines. You don't hear much from the GOP, which is all but powerless.

San Fraancisco City/County has the greatest concentration of Billionaires of any location.

Yet they tolerate crap under their heels, with encampments of homeless, mentally ill drug addicts in their midst.

The Homeless crisis is the result of laws passed just a few years ago, to legalize Weed, to make thefts to $950 mere citation-misdemeanors, to cancel 3 Strikes, to reduce prison sentences, to release early from prison, etc.

These insane policies are being copies/expanded nationwide.

The cost to house/confine these homeless druggies, would be less than the stupid train.

I say we should deport them to Mexico, where the weed is cheap.
