Republican strategist Gus Portela told Hill.TV's "Rising" on Thursday that a new law banning most abortions in Alabama may energize the Democratic base ahead of the 2020 elections.

"The play that was called was wrong, in my opinion," Portela, executive director at Accuracy in Media, said.

"It might create some problems in the future, and I think it might energize, politically speaking, ... a very important base for the Democrats, especially in a state like Alabama where [Sen.] Doug Jones [D] is running for reelection," he continued.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed the legislation, which would make all abortions illegal, even in the cases of rape and incest, on Wednesday.

Ivey said in a statement that the bill "closely resembles" an unenforceable abortion ban that has been part of Alabama law for more than 100 years.

Liberals, however, fear the Alabama law and campaigns in other states to make abortion illegal after a fetal heartbeat is detected could be lead to the reversal of Roe v. Wade, which legalizes the procedure across the U.S.

Democratic presidential candidates have seized on the news out of Alabama, calling the measure an attack on women's reproductive health.

Actually, I see it the other way around.  I think the AL abortion law could energize GOP base!

I don't really think the abortion issue really energizes all that many people outside of the ones they show on TV.

Bump for common sense.   Ignore this stratagist's advice at your own peril, conservatives.

This law is different @dfwgator It includes major prison time.  This has the potential to be THE issue next year.  And guarantees Trump will not replace Ginsburg, no matter when she dies, unless and until he wins reelection.

God bless ya, Alabama .. but y'all need to invest in a damn calendar.

Agreed.  This sets back the pro-life cause,  as well as that of conservatives generally.   Such fools!

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
Nonsense!  This law is the first step at righting a wrong that was done nearly 50 years ago.  We as a nation have allowed genocide to be a part of our fabric.  Flat out wrong.

This law does not result in anyone going to jail seeking an abortion.  The law does expose physicians that perform abortions once a heart beat is detected.  ONLY THE PHYSICIAN!  There is no criminal consequences for a mother that decides to have an abortion.

This is a good law.  At some point, we have to decide that an unborn child is a human life.  And as despicable as Scott Peterson was in the murder of his wife and unborn child, the fact is he was indicted, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of his unborn child, yet we give all women a pass when it comes to the same murder of their own baby because they have a say over their body, and the life of the unborn child does not count.  What kind of b*llsh*t is that?

The majority of people in America are opposed to abortion.  Enough said right there!

I applaud your enthusiasm and hope @jafo2010 --- but this law will take many steps through the judiciary and land in the circular file.  Not one life will be saved by this bill …. and it may damage our ability to introduce real change because now it's part of the 2020 campaigns.

I would love to see a Republican Council of Trent called to discuss the abortion "issue" and how to approach it from a position of unity.

But "abortion and unity" is an oxymoron.   **nononono*

It is hardly a "good law" if it ends up being invalidated by the Supreme Court and leads to the annihilation of Republicans and conservatives in the 2020 elections.   Let's not forget - even those who oppose abortion concede the right must be afforded to rape victims.   This law is going to make one fine commercial for Dems to demonize conservatives and their motivations.

The perfect is often the enemy of the good.   I understand and agree with the moral objection to abortion,  but this insistence that government be enlisted to enforce this moral position at the expense of a woman's liberty is going to lead to disaster for conservatives.   And a halt to more constitutional efforts to protect the unborn.

An aside - how pathetic is it that the rats can propose all manner of lunacy, from rebuilding every structure in the USA to slaughtering born babies to nuking non-compliant gun owners yet we run like frightened bunnies because one state in the union not only believes all human life is sacred but is willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Well one response is just because they act like authoritarian fascists is no excuse for us to do so as well.   Conservatives revere human liberty, and some of us even extend that reverence to the female of the species.

But another is that liberals control the mainstream media, which is the primary source of information for low intensity voters.   Not folks like us, who follow politics closely and whose sources of information range far beyond the mainstream media.    But for folks whose grasp of the news is anecdotal,  and for whom superficial reporting is all they have the time or interest to consume.   Their votes count just the same as ours do.   And they hear what's up from The View,  and the evening network news,  or the late night "comedians".    And you know what biased manure that lot is spreading.

Regrettably 'some conservatives' reverence for human liberty does not extend to the most vulnerable among us.

The media only has the power we grant them. Stop running scared and they will melt away.

The "most vulnerable among us"  reside within the wombs of their own mothers.   They are their mother's responsibility,  not the State's.

As for the media,  the problem is that low-intensity voters only consume the news that's easy.   They may never hear a conservative voice or perspective.  And their votes will cancel out yours and mine.

Well there's our disagreement in a nutshell. God forgive us when this idea of a 'liberty' finds it logical ends.

There is no slippery slope.  It is really very simple and straightforward.   Your state can assert its interest when the fetus is viable.   Just not before.   A pre-viable fetus is solely the responsibility of the mother.   That's the line of demarcation between the woman's liberty interest and the State's interest (should it choose to assert it) in protecting the fetus.

Sorry to put the burden on you,  but before the State can assert its interest, you can still try to persuade the woman to do the right thing.    Why not try, and let the Constitution protect the woman's liberty?

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
How can any society that kills it's young because they are an inconvenience hope to survive? All of this is crap from the left is the same BS and method the queers used to normalize homosexuality, than they pushed for the acceptance of all the freaks that pretend to be anything they imagine. No one should be surprised when the liberals pull the euthanasia card out of their anal orifice to rid society of those [they decide are to ill or old and are a drain on society or the worlds resources. When the life of a baby, societies future is given no value how can there be an expectation that any life has value?

My God, liberals have more concern and compassion for animals than they do for babies. It is incomprehensible to me that when there are so many methods of birth control available, short term, long term and permanent, that so many women choose ending a life, murder as the preferable solution because they were too drunk, too lazy or too horny to be proactive.

I have no compassion for the men her are so hot to get some that they are irresponsible either, and no to head off an argument from certain parties, I do not feel that those who have been raped or have a life threatening condition should be denied the choice to end a pregnancy immediately, but in the case of a rape that doesn't mean weeks or months after conception.

Satan is rejoicing as man lose more and more of his humanity.

It will do more than that. It will increase donations to Dim politicians, and it will result in people who weren't going to vote, registering as Dims and voting straight Dim tickets.

@libertybele

It won't. It might if there were reasonable exemptions, but it is so strict that even some people who are against abortion in some circumstances will vote against it.

Yup! The only people thrilled by it are the "life begins at erection" people, and they are a tiny minority of the voters.

Gee, what should it be.  Thirty pieces of silver, or a return to the Constitution as the basis of law?  What a tough choice.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

There is no slippery slope.  It is really very simple and straightforward.

You got that right.  Either we accept the Constitution of the United States of America as the foundation of all law, or we ignore the Constitution and make it up as we go.  Clearly, you side with the latter.

Your state can assert its interest when the fetus is viable.   Just not before.

Like I said, you choose to make it up as you go instead of following the wording of the Constitution.

A pre-viable fetus is solely the responsibility of the mother.

Whether pre or post, an unborn baby is the responsibility of both parents.

That's the line of demarcation between the woman's liberty interest and the State's interest (should it choose to assert it) in protecting the fetus.

Please show me where in the Constitution I can find this new "line of demarcation".  Is it anywhere near Amendment X which delegates that right to the State to decide in the absence of federal legislation?

Why not try, and let the Constitution protect the woman's liberty?

The woman's liberty has never been in jeopardy.  Never.  It is an egregious lie to say otherwise.  No one is dictating what a woman can do with her body.  No one.  She is in full control of it.  She alone decides whether or not to invite a man's sperm into her womb.  No one is trying to take that away from her.  So stop lying about it.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

This!!

It's a rallying point for our side too; and in fact, a whole lot of the American public is pro-life... blacks and Hispanics vote Democrat clearly more often than not; but if this issue is defining, we just might see a lot of crossover votes,  the Pro-Choicers are, I think more in minority, elder white women who think they are protesting about a right to abortion but in reality, they are protesting for blacks to be aborted by as much as five times white babies. The issue really is a black and white issue and these stats are becoming more well known.

And you tell Hispanics, they be in Florida, California,  New York or Texas, high population states about the reality, they might flip too.

Melissa A. or Candace Owen on twitter, you are starting to see a lot of black people start to say, "the Democrats support this and this isn't good for our people"....let alone, the welfare mother syndrome that can't have a man around the house.
