Former FBI General Counsel: We Were ‘Quite Worried Comey Would Appear To Be Blackmailing Trump’

Posted at 10:00 am on May 16, 2019 by Elizabeth Vaughn

Following a meeting with British spy Christopher Steele in September 2016, reporter Michael Isikoff broke the story about the infamous dossier. In what is referred to as circular reporting in the world of journalism, the FBI used Isikoff’s article in their FISA Court application to corroborate the allegations of the dossier.

In an April 2019 interview with Vanity Fair, Isikoff said, “I think it’s fair to say that all of us should have approached this, in retrospect, with more skepticism, particularly when we didn’t know where it was coming from.”

That would have been helpful. But the press locked onto this story as a hungry man would a meal and ran with it. Only when the Mueller Report was released which concluded there was no collusion did any members of the press tone down their rhetoric. Others have doubled down, so I suppose we should give Isikoff some credit.

Anyway, Isikoff interviewed former FBI General Counsel James Baker in an episode of Yahoo News’ “Skullduggery” which aired on Tuesday.

Was Comey Trying To Blackmail Trump With Steele Dossier? Former FBI Lawyer Says He Was ‘Quite Worried’ He Was

David Krayden | Ottawa Bureau Chief

A former top FBI lawyer said there was concern at the bureau that then-FBI Director James Comey was trying to blackmail then-President-elect Donald Trump with the notorious Steele dossier.

On Tuesday’s Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery,” James Baker described the atmosphere as “quite worried” after Comey met with Trump on Jan. 6, 2017, shortly before his inauguration. Baker says the way Comey threw the dossier into Trump’s face, it was difficult not to draw “analogies” to the behavior of FBI founding Director J. Edgar Hoover, who ruled federal law enforcement for nearly 50 years.

@mystery-ak

James Baker is lying and it is provable due to documents available.  In a meeting of the directors of the agencies below, and FBI’s General Counsel James Baker was there, a discussion was held about how President elect Trump would be informed about the activities of the Russians in the election.  It was decided Comey would tell the President elect, the FBI was not investigating him in relation to the Russian matter and that was the truth at that time.  James Baker was not in favor of telling Trump he was not being investigated, due to the FBI might investigate Trump later.  Here is the way directors of intelligence agencies informed Trump of what Russia had done to try to help elect him:

On January 6, two weeks before the inauguration, the head of these agencies went to Trump Tower to brief Trump:
Central Intelligence Agency Director
National Security Agency Director
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director.

Trump was told of the evidence that proved Russia had used social media on the internet and had contacted voters with fake information, and they tried to get into states’ voter lists, etc.  Due to the sexual nature of part of the briefing (dossier), it was determined Comey would meet with Trump privately after the completion of the full ICA briefing, to tell him of the prostitute material which also included the Russians had filmed this for possible blackmail of Trump.  Comey did meet privately to tell him about the sexual content.  Comey said that meeting lasted 5 minutes.

James Baker is lying.  Trump needed to know about the dossier and each Director agreed to save Trump embarrassment, Comey would tell him in private.  That meeting in Trump Tower was the first time Comey spoke to Trump, first time he had seen him.  As the private meeting began, Trump complimented Comey and told him to stay at the FBI.  To think Comey “threw the dossier into Trump’s face” is ridiculous and Baker knew Trump would be briefed privately so others there would not hear it.
