GOP angst grows amid Trump trade war
By Alexander Bolton - 05/14/19 06:00 AM EDT

Republicans are growing more nervous about next year’s race for the Senate as President Trump ratchets up a trade war with China that increasingly threatens to cause pain to U.S. farmers.

To be sure, the 2020 elections remain more than a year off, the president is popular in farm country and voters in rural states largely have stuck with Trump through thick and thin as the economy has grown and the jobless rate has fallen.

But GOP senators say few expected the trade war to last as long as it has.

With markets plunging on Monday and China announcing retaliation against U.S. farm exports, fears are growing that the fight could take a bite out of pocketbooks and even pose a threat to GOP senators at the ballot box next year.

It lasted as long as it has since the Chinese, although given a six month window to negotiate, just used the time as a delaying tactic and reneged on all conditions.

Trump is the only one standing up to cheating China and they do need to be dealt with. Trump's goal is no tariffs, which is an admirable goal. The Chinese have stolen enough from the US economy. The billions coming into the Treasury far exceeds the money needed to support the farmers.

Principles matter. Words matter.

If we want to reset the China/US/Global trade situation, there will be some pain.  We all need to grow up and understand that.

I'll take Trump tripping over himself trying to get something done over all the idiot Republicans combined in Congress who managed to do nothing in the past three years.  We have multiple decades of presidents giving the store away, making empty promises, and along comes Trump that wants to kick *ss and take names.

Just keep doing what you are doing Mr. President!

You know the only reason to vote for Pubs is the alternative is the Rats. I would have thought that more of them would be on board with Trump by now. The economy is good. Our foreign policy is pro America again and our allies know we are with them. Trump is confronting the immigration problem and has been nominating highly thought of judges.

The truth is that most congressional "Republicans" have no interest in supporting any of that.

It's becoming painfully clear that you're right.

“You can only sustain so much. We already have soybean farmers with their soybeans stacked up,” she added. “They got some help from USDA [the Department of Agriculture] but the ones I’ve talked to, that’s not the way they want to run their business. They want to actually sell things.”

According to Mike Staton, a Michigan State University Extension Soybean educator, soybeans contain two marketable components: meal and oil. Soybean meal is very high in protein. Ninety eight percent of soybean meal is used for animal feed (poultry, hogs and cattle mostly) and only one percent is used to produce food for people. On the other hand, 88 percent of soybean oil is used for human consumption (mostly cooking oil) and 12 percent is used as an alternative to petroleum oil.

Meat is gonna get cheaper because soybean prices will continue to fall depending on how much profit-taking the meat manufacturers grab.  Smithfield Foods is the largest pork processor and hog producer in America and the World.  They got bought out by a Chinese company in 2013.
