Passengers escape after plane skids off runway into river in Jacksonville, Florida

Boeing 737 was landing at a naval airport when it ended up in the St John’s river but 140-plus passengers and crew survive

The Miami Air Interntional plane, believed to be chartered by the US military, was trying to land at a navy airport at around 9.40pm local time after a flight from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba when it slid off the strip and into St John’s river.

There were no reports of fatalities but local WOKV-TV that at least two people suffered minor injuries and that the plane was attempting to land during a heavy thunderstorm.

The mayor of Jacksonville said on Twitter that everyone on board the flight was “alive and accounted for” but that crews were working to control jet fuel on the water.

This was a chartered aircraft.  All people safe, some injured, not life threatening.  There were some family pets in one area and thinking is they did not survive.  The people were coming from GITMO.  Some people go to GITMO to see/visit military family members and they consider it a vacation, so there were also kids and older people on the plane.  Passengers helped each other and put the kids and older people on the first boat - looked like rubber raft type boat.

When they were going to get on this plane, which was overdue at GITMO, the people getting off said it was hot on the plane - the air conditioner did not work.  So the people got on the plane knowing they would be hot until they landed in the states.  It was reported by someone who had been on the plane back to the states, and now was off it, there was a hole in the right wing of the plane.  Do not know if that happened during the flight or after it slid off the runway into the lake.

It didn't "plunge" into the river.
