Community members and city leaders from around Texas gathered on the State Capitol's West steps, with a rally cry to state lawmakers: they want their paid sick leave.

The rally happened shortly after the House Committee on State Affairs listened to public testimony for four Senate bills that would prohibit local governments from regulating businesses when it comes to ordinances requiring paid sick leave and banning asking about criminal history.

Senate Bill 2485 bans local governments from making rules about employer-provided benefits. Senate Bill 2486 deals with regulation of overtime pay. Senate Bill 2487 bans paid sick leave and paid time off ordinances. Senate Bill 2488 prohibits local governments from making laws banning asking about criminal history.

"The legislature really should be trying to support working Texans. The bills they're hearing is just about supporting big business special interests at the expense of everyday people," said Austin District 4 City Council Member Greg Casar.

Cities exist at the pleasure of the state.  They are not independent fiefdoms.

Austin needs reminding
