Texas is the only state that doesn't allow breweries to sell beer-to-go, according to the bill's author

Craft breweries in Texas are one step closer to being allowed to sell beer to go.

The "beer-to-go" bill passed the Texas House Friday.

Now, the bill heads to the Senate.

TUPPS Brewery in McKinney is one of more than 200 craft breweries in Texas that could benefit from the bill.

"We would dance in the streets if this fully passed," TUPPS Brewery owner Keith Lewis said.

Under the bill, customers could sip beer at a brewery then take some home, skipping the trip to the store.

The Texas House has approved a bill that would extend beer and wine sales on Sundays and also allow craft breweries to sell beer to-go.  These measures were tacked onto legislation that relates to the efficiency and operation of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

HB 1545 is what’s known as a “sunset bill,” which needs to pass to keep the agency open.  The bill’s author is State Rep. Chris Paddie, a Republican from Marshall.

“The first thing the bill does is continue the TABC for 12 years recognizing the state has continued need for a strong regulator for the alcoholic beverage industry,” Paddie said.

State Rep. Drew Springer, a North Texas Republican, introduced the amendment to begin beer and wine sales at 10 a.m. on Sunday, instead of noon in licensed retailers. He said his proposal is all about convenience.

I would certainly welcome this.  There are 4 excellent local breweries in my little Texas town and only one has beer available, sometimes, at my local grocery store (Guadalupe Brewery~Texas Honey Ale).  Though they all have excellent Beir Gardens, the growler thing is such a hassle and leaves much to be desired.  The best and nearest (Faust Brewery) has already invested in a bottling machine, they have a Pale Ale that rivals all.
