A resurfaced tweet from Rep. Ilhan Omar saw the Minnesota Democrat claim U.S. forces killed “thousands” of Somalis during the 1993 “Black Hawk Down” mission -- despite multiple analysts concluding the number was much smaller.

In the October 2017 tweet discovered by journalist John Rossomando, Omar was responding to a Twitter user who'd highlighted that more than a dozen U.S. soldiers were killed and another 73 were wounded in the Battle of Mogadishu, saying it was the “worst terrorist attack in Somalia history.”

Omar, a Somali refugee who was then a Minnesota state representative, refuted the tweet, insisting that “thousands” of Somalis were killed by American forces.

“In his selective memory, he forgets to also mention the thousands of Somalis killed by the American forces that day,” Omar tweeted.

She also included the hashtag, “NotTodaySatan.”

The number of Somali casualties in the Battle of Mogadishu is widely disputed. A representative of the Somali National Alliance estimated that only 133 militiamen were killed during a 2001 interview while “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War” author Mark Bowden estimated roughly 500 Somalis were killed. As the Investigative Project on Terrorism also noted, the Rand Corporation reported that about 300 civilians were killed while others estimated nearly 1,000.

Yes, US forces killed thousands just for the hell of it... wait, what - the Somalis were trying to kill them?

She wants to call us savages and murderers...but it wasn't U.S. or U.N. soldiers that left the bullet riddled body of a Pakistani Army captain stripped of his uniform with his Johnson shoved down his throat outside the soccer stadium in Mogadishu on 5 June 1993.

It wasn't U.S. or U.N. forces that used machetes to chop up Reuters photographer Dan Eldon and AP Photographer Hansi Krauss.  I knew Eldon personally and had done media escorts with him on more than one occasion.

Last time I ever saw him was the day I flew out of Mogadishu and he was hanging around the airport terminal looking for a story.  My last words to him were "keep your head down and be safe."

But WE are the murders to this ignorant (self edit)

They were trying to kill not only US forces, but other Somalis as well.

They threatened and/or killed anyone that tried to help us.  The contractors Brown and Root helped get several of their Somali employees out of Somalia just ahead of a machete aimed at their neck.

U.S. Pilot Who Was Shot Down During Somali Raid Responds To Omar’s 'Disgusting' Black Hawk Down Tweet
Townhall, Apr 23, 2019

[...]

Over at The Federalist, U.S. Army Sgt. Maj.Kyle Lamb (retired), who was also deployed in Somalia at the time, took Omar to task for her “disgusting” tweet:

Quote
I take special exception to Omar’s disgusting comments because I served in the Battle of Mogadishu, which was later portrayed in the movie “Black Hawk Down.” If you aren’t familiar with the real story behind “Black Hawk Down,” let me set the scene for you.

In late 1992, President George H. W. Bush launched Operation Restore Hope in support of United Nations initiatives to restore some semblance of law and order to Somalia, which was wracked by devastating famine and violent warlords eager to use the chaos and hopelessness to establish corrupt fiefdoms.

[…]

Task Force Ranger was the 1993 military effort ordered by President Bill Clinton to capture Aidid and his lieutenants so the U.N. could deliver food and medical aid without fear of being attacked or killed by Aidid’s forces. The American soldiers Omar attacked in her tweet — the men of Task Force Ranger –weren’t sent to Somalia for fame or fortune. They weren’t there because of a deep desire to visit the God-forsaken nation of Somalia. They were deployed to support peacekeepers who were desperate to rescue the country from starvation and the ravages of civil war. To do that, they had to capture the men responsible for it.

[…]

I am thankful Omar and her family and countless others were able to escape to neighboring Kenya while we fought to protect those left behind, but I simply cannot comprehend her attitude towards those of us who fought to protect her country and countrymen from warlords who plunged Somalia only further into violence and starvation. I am glad that Omar can now enjoy the very freedoms we fought to protect, like the freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion affirmed in the U.S. Constitution, but I don’t understand why she uses those freedoms to slur the men and women of the U.S. military who made her security and liberty a reality.

The simple truth is that Omar enjoys the fruits of American combat deaths, yet she can’t even bring herself to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice that was made on her behalf, either as a Somali or an American. Her clan didn’t stand a chance against Aidid and Habar Gidirs, so I don’t blame her for leaving. But I do blame her for attacking those of us who had zero personal interest or investment in her nation for doing our jobs on behalf of our country. And I blame her for smearing American servicemen because we answered the call of our nation to address the violent barbarism of hers.

Unlike Omar, I’m not a politician. I don’t have power or influence. I don’t have a vote in Congress or the ability to direct America’s foreign policy. I’m just one of the men who strapped it on as a member of Task Force Ranger and went into harm’s way to help bring peace and security to her and her people. And let me tell you, she missed a helluva fight.

Only 133 Somali militiamen died in the fighting with U.S. Rangers and Delta Force soldiers, Capt. Haad, a representative of the Somali National Alliance (SNA) said in a 2001 interview with Author Mark Bowden. He estimated 500 Somali deaths in his book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, considered the definitive account of the Battle of Mogadishu. Others put the Somali death toll closer to 1,000. A 2000 Rand Corporation report estimated 300 noncombatants were killed.

Higher estimates may be related to the swarm-like tactics used by thousands of Aidid's clan members to overwhelm American forces. Women and children also attacked the U.S. troops, carrying everything from machine guns to knives and machetes.

"Losses taken on the Somali side came as a result of their attempts to ambush our ground convoy and flight of aircraft. Our forces, being vastly outnumbered, fought to save their own lives. All the Somali militia had to do was walk away, but they persisted," Durant said.

Durant's Black Hawk helicopter, code-named "Super 6-4," was shot down after a rocket-propelled grenade hit its tail rotor. Durant was injured and ran out of ammunition fighting back as a human wave of militia approached. Delta Force snipers Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon were killed when they joined him trying to keep the Somali militia at bay. Each was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Somali mob dragged their bodies through the streets of Mogadishu. Durant ultimately was captured and held by Aidid's militia for 11 days before being released in a prisoner exchange.

It was awful, simply awful.  But the honor and bravery of our men fighting for each soldier... alive, wounded or killed ... made it somehow bearable.

I despise this congresswoman.

The ONLY honorable member of Clinton’s Cabinet...SecDef Les Aspen was the only one who did the right thing after Blackhawk Down. He admitted he turned down GEN Colin Powell’s and MG Thomas Montgomery’s request for armor and close air support shortly before the Battle of Mogadishu.

And then he resigned shortly after.

Yes...I read that this guilt actually killed him...but I am one who will always remember and never forget....he can rot in hell.

My son Jon met Durant[who autographed Black Hawk Down] and they talked about this very thing...a lot of things would have been different if Aspin would have approved more air support and armor...

This despicable woman seems to be the new John Kerry.

If Kerry would have ever come to power as President, he would have trashed all servicemen and disheartened many of those serving.

Like Kerry, the more she opens her mouth, the more we know who we are up against,

Her head is filled with anti-Americanisms, it's one thing to bring out some criticisms, I won't use examples but they are out there and I've heard them, okay, let's say in allegedly helping to overthrow the Iranian government of Mossadegh in 1953,

National Review on this topic , some documents have been declassified since then, NRO sometimes playing the role of apologist or defender.

But it's another thing to come up with total fabrications... for being a total dumba$$. All we have here, is this was something she tweeted some time ago. Still, all she spouts off is anti-Americanisms and I guess anti-semitisms as well.  She's heard one side of the story but now, these are total lies. Who did she listen to on this?

Thank you to yourself and @truth_seeker for your support.

I think right now the Old Bulls in the Democrat Party are scared to do too much to try and reign in the like of Talib...Omar and AOC.

The DNC created this monster and now they don't want to do anything to have it turn on them for fear of losing their seat in Congress and therefore their long held power.

So the fiery rhetoric they keep spewing will only get worse IMO.

And a younger society who wasn't born when all of this went down in 1993 and who aren't taught about it in Government or History classes will believe what someone like Omar says about what happened.

She listens to her advisors, who know what she needs to say to get elected in her district, and because she is stupid enough to believe she is being given wisdom. She is nothing more than a robot built of flesh and bone that only knows what it is told.

I'm curious if Omar or her family has ties to former warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid?

His son who was in the U.S. Marines is still involved in their politics and at one poit took his dad's place as the head of the SNA.
