Ocasio-Cortez defends VA healthcare to veterans: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'
by Julio Rosas
 | April 22, 2019 08:02 PM

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., defended the treatment of veterans by the Department of Veterans Affairs during a town hall event in her district last week.

The freshman congresswoman said privatization of the VA will not help veterans because of the "for-profit healthcare industry."

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Ocasio-Cortez, 29, said, insisting the VA provides "some of the highest quality" healthcare for veterans. She said people who advocate for a privatized VA are only trying to fix it in favor of pharmaceutical companies.

It's broke...broken, that is.

Other government-run systems aren't much better.

Due to a long-term unemployment stretch I signed up for Medicaid to get some long-overdue bad teeth removed. I consulted a dentist (itself a nightmare trying to find an opening), got a referral to the oral surgeon, and submitted the claim to the "managed care" company that Medicaid now subsidizes instead of providing direct funding. I got a phone call and a letter from this company cheerfully announcing I had been approved... for the wrong teeth. The teeth that needed to be taken out weren't deemed "medically necessary." Clearly they never actually saw my case.

This is what the socialists want to force upon the rest of America.

Another moronic, uninformed statement by the bartender. The government is inefficient and incompetent in everything it does. Also corrupt.

How old is she?  Supposedly 29, but she sounds like she's 6.  The ignorance and lack of awareness is amazing.

The Bronx bartender just doesn't want anyone to know that the private sector healthcare can do a better job than a government run system. It would ruin her and the other Libs plan for universal health care.

I vote for letting her live in Venezuela for about a year and then see her opinions.

She's a strange egg. I've watched a number of interviews with her, and her expressions and mannerisms are just off, like she lives very much inside her head.

She's struggling to use those two brain cells to recall the information her handlers have fed her.

Some people are just record-breaking stoopid. Maybe even "3 o stooopid".

I am an Agent Orange veteran rated as being 100 percent service-connected due to Agent Orange exposure and other issues being treated in local hospitals because the VA hospital is 75 miles away and doesn't treat cancer anyhow, and am being treated for lymphatic cancer, which IS the primary form of cancer related to Agent Orange exposure.

The VA is refusing to pay my medical expenses because I went to the ER at the local hospital instead of taking an ambulance 75 miles to the VA hospital, where they would have just transferred me to a local hospital there.  The excuse they use is I didn't notify them within 24 hours of being admitted. Seems like nobody explained to them that someone in intensive care has the time or the ability to look up the phone numbers and make the necessary calls. Not to mention the lack of clarity due to the drugs being given to me in intensive care.

I let them get away with this when I had the flesh-eating bacteria problem, and spent the next 4 years spending every dime I had to pay off the medical bills not paid by medicare, but I am NOT going to let them slide on this one.

A conversation I once had with my dad, A WWII vet
Me:"Dad, can you use the VA?"
Dad:"Yes, because I was in the military"
Me:"Do you use the VA?"
Dad:"No, because I was in the military"

I can't agree with that. The Army hospitals that I received treatment in were 1st class operations, filled with dedicated doctors and nurses. I don't have a single bad thing to say about any of my treatments at Army hospitals.

I think it was more related to his experience with military bureaucracy.

My Father in Law served in WWII and was a PPOW for a number of years. Messed him up pretty bad, but he was a great guy. Always treated me well. He went through the VA system. The nurses and Doctors in the hospital were AMAZING. Kind, dedicated, pleasant, and He received top notch care ONCE he got through the system. The hoops they had to jump through and documentation they had to provide etc.... was crazy. But once he got in, ZERO complaints.
