N. Korea says Pomepo isn't 'mature' enough for nuclear negotiations

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea no longer wants Secretary of State Mike Pompeo involved in nuclear talks, calling for someone who "is more careful and mature in communicating," state media said Thursday.

The official KCNA news agency also quoted Kwon Jong Gun, a senior official at the North's foreign ministry, as saying "no one can predict" the situation on the Korean Peninsula if the U.S. does not abandon the "root cause" that compelled Pyongyang to develop its nuclear program, without elaborating.

Earlier, North Korea said that it had test-fired a new type of "tactical guided weapon," its first such test in nearly half a year.

Last week, during a US Senate subcommittee hearing, Mr Pompeo was asked if he would agree with descriptions of Mr Kim as a "tyrant", he then responded: "Sure, I'm sure I've said that."

This was met with a strong reaction from North Korean foreign ministry official Kwon Jong-gun, who said that Mr Pompeo "spouted reckless remarks, hurting the dignity of our supreme leadership... to unveil his mean character".

Mr Kwon also blamed Mr Pompeo for the abrupt ending to the Hanoi summit.

This is also probably why President Trump answered that Otto Warmbier question that way 2 months ago after the summit in Vietnam.  You don't want to upset the NK regime. I just saw a bit of the 'Killing Fields' and I noted the concentration camp of the Khmere Rouge. Maybe better said a death camp.  It might not be North Korea's, but I'm sure, for human rights, NK's are still horrid.

All I get from this is Pompeo is actually the one insisting on accountability and they don’t like it. They’d rather deal with someone more malleable, like his boss.

Pompeo represents the iron fist inside the velvet glove.  Trump is deliberately taking the velvet glove role to ensure that any potential for peace is not derailed by personalities.  But having both approaches represented is the correct way to approach this.
